Can You Fit An Internal Zip For Me (In London)?

I've had enough! I've read the info at MPC2000XL.com and literally hundreds of posts in the forum. I have tried every suggested tip for installing the 100mb zip drive. All I get is power and the dreaded "no floppy device". I am using an 8 output, 32mb ram XL with a commercially supplied MPC2000xl zip drive install kit and an Z100ATAPI drive. OS version is 1.14.

By all accounts it is clear that despite all the advice made available here and at mpc2000xl.com this upgrade has a low initial success rate. I have now tried two different 100mb zip drives.

My reason for the upgrade is to remove some of the cables from my set-up and free up the power socket currently being used by the external scsi zip. i cannot keep buying zip drives until I find one that is recognized!!

Any "Experts" in (South) London willing to help? I'd rather spend my time building rhythms, not playing with drives and jumpers!

but, is your zip drive iomega branded?
and is the jumper set to master (like the pic below) :


i'm sorry if you've checked that already but i had the same problem when i installed my zip drive. if it still doesn't work, i'd be tempted to try a new ribbon cable - it's getting power ok yeah? (the green light flashes when you eject or put in a disk?)

I am going through the same problem you are. Same exact problem is happening, no floppy device. My zip drive doesn't flash a green light like said in the reply mine flashes yellow when I put a disk in and eject it. Its a hp zip drive model Z100IDE Its iomega branded and says its rev. a1. My ribbon cable also has 3 hook ups as opposed to just 2, a connection for the mother board and one for the zip, would that make a difference? I ordered another 100mb zip and alsos a 250 mb zip just to see if I was sold a faulty zip. All my cables are tight and secure and the jumpers are like the diagram, still no luck.

Yes it's an Iomega, and yes it is set to master?

Is the red line on the ribbon cable supposed to be next to the jumper pins like mine? And on the motherboard, which end is the red line supposed to be at?

Anyone who has checked mpc2000xl.com must agree, there is LACK OF DETAIL when it comes to this subject. Certainly not enough to do the mod with no problems!

I thought the MPC was a "classic" machine, used by so many credible producers. Yet there there seems to be a lack of definitive answers, hardback print (books!) or shops where these machine can be serviced or upgraded. As for decent websites, TWO?

Where in London?

Try both Master or Single jumper settings.

On the load screen change DEVICE to ATAPI.

Red line on the ribbon cable is ALWAYS
close to the POWER connector.

There's an AUTOLOAD feature that tells the 2kxl to auto load from
Floppy/SCSI/ATAPI/F-ROM. This may be the reason why your MPC
says no floppy drive, cause it's STILL searching for a floppy when
there's none to be found. Adjust this feature to allow ATAPI. I'm not
in front of my MPC (I'm at work) but I know it's there cause I've used it.

my load screen will not give me the option for ATAPI , I get the rest but no ATAPI. I went to the menu to change what device to boot from like you said but there is no ATAPI option. I sent my drive back today hopefully when I get the new one this problem will clear up. I also ordered a 250 mb drive to give a try, I will also try a different ribbon cable.

ok I had the same problem thinking of doing a video tutorial of this because I see alot of people haveing the same problem.
any why I had the same problem I made sure everythign was right set to master IDE cable was not bad (check that it could be the problem also) but I had another zip in my computer so I swaped the 2 and instant success make sure that the zip that you have is getting the right power 5+v and not a 12+v not sure how to tell you to check this. If everything is right make sure that you do not have a bent or broken pin in either the zip or on the motherboard hope that helps

ZIPS need both, +5Vdc AND +12Vdc
from the motherboard in the 2kxl..

^ nah, you only need the 5V (red) and the ground cable (black).. the yellow cable can be cut off. in fact, if you are modifying the original power cable the floppy was connected to (which i did) then there isn't even a yellow cable there..

Just a stab if you are pretty certain that the hardware is right,
I suggest trying OS 1.14C. It can be found in the archives.

ive experienced an other problem with using ATAPI-ZIPs(iomega100) (ive mebe missed earlier post about this..) primary device set to ATAPI and in my case the boot sequence hanged on "Wait....." for a half minute or so intead of e few seconds - before the detect mem' thing started. when the mpc was up and running there was no probs to write or read the Zips. that start up thing was annoying tho', so i took the step only to use internal SCSI devices...
