MPC-Samples from ZIP

Hope that i can find a response to a little problem...

A few years ago i had a MPC2000XL with ext. SCSI 100MB Zip.
Then couse i needed money i sell the MPC.
On many ZIP-Disks i've hunderts of samples and sounds.

Now i want to extract those samples to my PC. there's no problem with WaveLab (and other tools) to extract the samples.

The Problem: Now if i connect the ZIP-Drive to the PC and i list the directories many samples won't be shown by the Windows Explorer.
I know that there are many more samples (.snd/.wav) on those ZIP's.

All the copied/extracted samples are limited to 8 chars like: 33BASSDR.snd
all others won't be shown.

Is anybody out there who can give me a little help? I've tried to contact the local AKAI-Dealer but they say: there are no other samples on the disks. The only way i can imagine is to buy a MPC...

yeh i get the same prob with mpc formatted zip disks. it only works the other way around. ( ie pc formatted zip disks read in the mpc & pc ). there is a way around this and i think its got to do with the os file system, like fat 16 or something.

Windows file explorer, go to options and show hidden files..

I think that should help..

nup, im using xp is that what u where referrring to. cause it didnt work.

exactly - unless your computer is formatted in fat16 there is no way you will be able to view the contents of an mpc formatted zip.. showing hidden files won't work. it's a pain in the ass.. i have a couple of zip disks i formatted in the mpc before i realised this which are now completely useless to me , i can't even re-format them in the pc ! sucks..

Uh, fat16 has nothing to do with it.

My computers can read every partition of any MPC formatted disk and they are NTFS, FAT32, and even ext2. Then again, I am a developer.

Win9x can natively read the first partiition of any MPC formatted disk.

Could this be nothing to do with formatting, but with the problem of using names longer than 8 characters on the MPC?

I found this when I first looked at an MPC zip on my Mac. For example I had a drum kit of sounds taken from breaks of old disco tracks on the Salsoul label. On the MPC these were all called "SALSOUL (whatever instrument it was)". On the Mac it just showed one sample simply called "SALSOUL_" even though I knew there were about 8 different ones.

What I did was ...(& it was a bit risky as I could have lost lots of sounds) I loaded the sound that was listed. Renamed it on the computer once I knew what it was. Then erased it from the zip ....... A sample still showed up on the zip called "SALSOUL_" & that was the next one on the zip starting with that name.

I realise I could also try the same thing by renaming the files on the zip, so if I'd called the one thing being listed as "SALSOUL_" as "SALS 1" I should then find I had "SALS 1" & "SALSOUL_" listed & could go through the zip that way.

I think this is a common problem as a lot of people do the sensible thing with naming MPC samples & get as much information into the name as possible.
