argh! mono!

here's the situation.

say i have a flute sample that's about 4 seconds long and i have it on mono, you know, when you hit the same pad twice it repeats. well i run it through the note variation and make a melody over a four bar sequence. okay now i'm going into a second sequence where i don't want the flute playing but the last note of the flute from the first sequence keeps playing because it's mono.. i never had this problem with the sequencer/sampler i used before (boss sp505) but this prob is on about half of my new mpc beats.

i actually don't mind it on some because the transition seems smooth. instead of cutting something off right after 4 bars it just flows out in the next sequence, with some decay at the end of course. but this shit gets annoying on others where the chord progression changes and the last note from the last sequence doesn't match it.

as for using the note off option, i only use that for other kinds of samples that don't require much playing (pad hits) because the note off on the mpc seems "sticky" if anyone understands that and those recordings come off sounding choppy.

what SHALL i do??

One workaround would be to set another (unused) pad to mute the pad that has your flute sample, and then hit that pad on the first note of the next sequence.

Lo-fi's suggestion is really good. I do this a lot. You can get a sound to cut of in a much more accurate way than using note off.

If it is always going to be the same sample in the track that needs to be cut off you could make a copy of it. Trim that to a better length & set an envelope with the decay you want when you assign it to a pad.

One method I use (longer in some cases) is make a copy of the note, tune it to whatever pitch it is and trim it down in the trim screen. You can make the note as long/short as you want. Then you can assign it to a pad and use that note in your sequence.

^i thought of that too, but like you said it's a longer process and the copies would take up more memory.

set a note for the flute sample at zero velocity at the end of your sequence and it will cut it off. so its basicly re-triggering a silent hit of the flute. or change it to note off and set the approaite duration. i do all my dirty work this way.

Sorry, I forgot to say I have a tiny little sample of silence, called "cut-off" which I have a copy of on every zip. I assign that to the pad that is doing the muting. I don't think this works if you use a pad that doesn't have a sample assigned to it.
