Sampling Vocals

Hey, how do you rip the vocals off a record to use in your track?

The same way you sample any other sound off the record. If you are hoping to get a vocal without any music you can only do that if an acapella version has been put on the record. Often it is only the DJ promos that have the acapellas, but you can usually track down mp3s on the net.

That is what you were asking .... how to get solo vocals out of a record, not the basics of hooking up a turntable & some kind of mixer or pre-amp to your MPC ???

Yeah. I know how to hook it up, I just thought there was a way to make the vocals stand out more so that you don't really hear the background sounds. Thanks.

Vocals are usually in the mid-range frequencies, so you can cut a lot of bass out with eq or a high pass filter & they should still sound ok. Cutting out the high frequency sounds like hi-hats & cymbals is harder because you are likely to remove some of the brighter sounds in the vocal too.

So, if you can find an acapella of the vocal you want that is your best route, or get someone to record some original vocals for you. Otherwise it is a case of seeing how much of the rest of the record you can cut out with eq & filters, although it is unlikely you will get a perfect result. You will either need to work with what music you cannot remove, or end up with a really lo fi vocal that sounds like it is coming through an old telephone... which can be a good effect.

this is a good solution - VERY simple if -> you have find 2 identical mixed tracks/songs, one with the vocals on and one instrumental verison... when using software noise filters (look in in sounsforge) when using the !instrumental! version of the identical mixed track as !NOISE! .. the acapella vocals stands out pretty clean after ya own stuff is blended in - TIP
