Musicians friend has the kit for 119.00. Includes ribbons and instructions.
Very easy to install.
It's basically an internal Iomega eide-atapi zip drive (100 mb) It doesn't matter if it's mac or pc (should you decide to buy one on your own) And you can install a 250 mb internal Iomega ide-atapi zip drive as well just make sure you dload the 1.14c OS that tutor has on this site; it works great with the zip 250. If you go this route, musicians friend sells the ribbon cables and power adapter for 34.99.
I'd go with the entire zip 100mb kit; it's a cinch and a steal for this price.
If you live in nyc I do installs for 50.00 and you can wait while it's done. Usually takes about 20 minutes. OH BTW here's the link at musicians friend.com

Why would he or she pay you $50 dollars, when they can install the zip drive themself for free. It is very easy to install, I don't see paying anyone $50, Just do it yourself.

i didn't tell you or anyone to pay me 50 dollars; that's what I charge. I didn't say it was hard to install neither. I did say it came with the instructions. Congrats btw for you installing it!

new board member and new mpc owner here. anyway, i just got an internal zip drive off eBay for $14 shipped. there were a bunch on there. here's a link to get you started.

http://search.ebay.com/search/search.dl ... ternal+zip

the question i have (having already read the installation tutorial), is - is the wire splicing and internal stuff worth doing yourself, or are you better off ordering a kit for $34? my entire purchase will still be under $50. i just don't know if i want to hassle with trying to find those parts locally(that terminal block thing). any advice?

hasn't anyone upgraded to a zip themselves?

If you think it would be a hassle to source the terminal block, go for the safe route and pay your money for the cable straight from Akai.

Terminal block = 5p
IDE data cable = £2
IDE Power cable=£2

Total = £4.05 ($6)

YOu can get terminal block from any hardware store.

Yep, I did about 2 years ago. I replaced the floppy using the guide I found on mpc2000xl.com.

i found this cable on a site that i think will negate the need to hand chop up cables to create the power supply. does this look correct?
