Mute!!

I've been into music production for several years, although I'm actually quite new to the MPC 2000 XL. I've gone through the manual and can't quite figure something out. That is, once I have a drum beat going, how can I mute individual pads?? So if I had a snare, and a kick, and then wanted to just mute out the kick for a couple of bars, how can I do that? It's a real pain when it comes to wanted to record a track in Cubase or wherever when I can't play around with the drums (because I can only record the whole drum loop as it is when its full - if that makes sense).

Any help will be greatly appriciated.

I would suggest spreading your drumsounds over different tracks. So in the main screen start recording, let's say a kick on track-1. When you've got that one done, switch to track-2 and lay down some snares. If you put all the drumparts on different track, you can mute or solo each track from the "track mute" screen.

Thanks, I understand about the different tracks, but if I do that, how can I hear the rest of the drums with it? SO if I did snares on track 1, and then I wanted to put a kick on track 2, how can I hear the original snare sounds to guide me when putting the kicks down. Does that make sense? I really need to sort this out, as it's driving me a bid crazy now.

I guess an easier way of asking is by asking if it's possible to hear several (up to 8 I guess really) tracks playing at the same time (so I can hear when to put each drum part in).

Yes, it's possible to hear several tracks playing at the same time. You could've found out for yourself by putting a kick on track 1 and a snare on track 2 and just pressing play, though...

Ah, I see. I'm sure I've tried that before. But I'll give it a go and see what happens. I'll be back if I get into trouble again.

Personally, I have trouble just laying down a snare or kick by itself. I need to record the snare and the kick at the same time in order to have that human feel. After I do record them on one track, I'll go into the edit screen and copy just the snare and paste it into another track. Then I'll go back and erase the snare from the track that has the bass drum on it. This way both pads were recorded at the same time, but they're on different tracks. Usually, I'll use this technique and all my drums will be on separate tracks for muting, etc. Hope this helps.

i think you should sequence them in the mp 1st and take what you want out from there....
