Drum Management

As everyone else here, I have thousands of drum sounds. I was wondering how people manage their drum sounds on the mpc. I have seperated my drums on my jaz disk by drum part (i.e. kicks, snares, etc) which of course makes it easier, but when you have over 1G of kicks alone it is still hard to pick em out. What complicates things, obviously, is the slow MPC 2000xl preview system, one shot at a time after loading. Often I find myself opting for drums that appear early on my Jaz disk, no doubt missing some gems at the end of the disk.

I was wondering how you all manage drums? Create pgm by drum part? Create Kits to recreate a drum set? Scroll through every damn drum you have?

On a related note, what is the sample preview system like on the 4000? Faster?

I keep a catalog on my PC... When I chop my sample, I then go to my catalog (snar folder, kick folder, etc.. etc.. ) and get the best sounding drum sample for the sample I just finished chopping up. That way it free's up space on my zips and there isnt any unnessisary (spell check) sounds to mess with.

I'll use a software with a preview play so I can scroll through and pick. drag and drop which sounds I like. MPC Editor is a good previewer of sounds. Sound Forge is also, I drag and drop with it all the time. I have samples everywhere and in no particular order on CD's but inside my mpc it's by song. No drum folders or anything, just one folder with my whole song in it. Random samples I'll place in a misc folder.
