Technical questions for the MPC2000xl and the MPC2000
Bytamir muskat Tue Jan 18, 2005 8:39 pm
Hello
1. my name is Tamir Muskat, I'm a producer/engineer, working with the mpc 2000 for some years.
lately, for some live action, I started working with a lap top & a software called Abelton “Live".
great stuff, but... computers are Crashing!!! mpc's DON’T!! I want my mpc back!!
one major problem & a question to all of who found the time to read this...
I want be able to trigger a Seq. at any time from the pads.
but... I don’t want to always wait for the seq to end ( 1 bar, 4 bars, or any other amount of bars I programed it to be..)
I want to trigger it at any time while its still in quantize.
I guess I'm asking if you could decide when the trigger is kicking the next seq in, without being worried about heating it exactly on time.
can some function tell the pad to trigger as a 1/4 note trigger or 1/8 or a full bar? ( Like in the "Live" software, you can change Sequences with one trigger & its all ways "on the grid", in quantize!.)
i know the mpc2000 CANT do that but may be the new mpc2000xl can?
I hope my question is clear,
in advance _ thanx much for any help on the issue!

well... is there any machine out there that can do that?

get an ibook or powerbook and buy yourself a copy of ableton. then tell me it crashes. yes you can trigger sequences form the pads. under the next seq key on the XL. use SUDDEN to hit that seq in when you hit it or PAD to que up the next sequence

thanx for the info but... when i go to SUDDEN the triger is in my finger, it wont be qantized when i move to the next seq right? know what i mean? i want it to allways be on time. (deciding if my triger is 1/4 note or 1/8...)
now , another small qestion.. can i assign the pads to triger seq's _ pad 1 to seq 1 , pad 2 to seq 2, etc.. i will need to stop pad 1 from playing when i move to pad 2 right? then can i change a program & get the same set up for the next song>?
also is there a way to triger a pad & the loop will rool till i push the next pad without holding my finger on it ( like the mpc2000) i'm about to get the xl if all of this will work, other wise i'll go & check my self..

Tamir,
Check out the YAMAHA RS7000.
It's a MPC type machine, but the way that you can deal with sequences in real time is very much like Ableton Live.
You can instatntly set sequences to start right on the "1" of the next coming bar and stuff. I'm pretty sure it can do everything you're asking for.
I think this may be what you're looking for.

Yes it IS a sampler. It has built-in sounds as well.....but it also has a sampler. It's expandable to TWICE the sample memory of the MPC2000XL.

Got this info from a website:
"The 4 MB of onboard sampling memory is expandable to 64 MB. Users can import samples from a variety of formats, sample from external sources, or even re-sample the internal sequenced sounds. The integrated sampling Sequencer automatically breaks the samples and generates a corresponding MIDI sequence. Audio beats of different tempos can then be syncronized and processed the same way as MIDI data, and with the same filters and parameters as the internal synth voices."

* memory capacity 200.000 notes
* timing resolution 1/480 quarter-note
* max. 64 notes polyphony
* realtime, step and grid step recording
* 16 phrase tracks/pattern
* 16 sequencer tracks/song
* 1024 user patterns (64 styles x 16 sections
* over 4000 preset phrases
* 256 user phrases/style
* 20 pattern chains
* 20 songs
* Play Effects: Harmonize, Note, Timing
* Arpeggiator with 5 types
* Loop Remix
* AWM2 tone generator
* 62 notes polyphony
* 16 multi-timbres
* 1054 preset voices, 63 drum-kit voices + GM voices
* 6 filter types
* effects: reverb, delay/chorus, variation, master, master EQ
* 256 samples
* 20bit A/D conversion, 24bit D/A conversion
* sampling frequencies: 5.5125kHz to 48kHz
* sample memory 4 MB RAM, expandable to 64 MB
* 64 x 240 dots graphic LCD (backlit
* Smart Media card slot
* SCSI

sorry, i didnt see the sampler part on the rs7000 website before..
in any way, unfortianetly 64mb wont do for me, i work with tones of sampels, thats why i put my eye on the mpc2000xl, they managed to bring it up to 520mb. that could do it for me...
dear people, any other ideas?

mmm... yes thats weird the mpc1000 is 128,
people, any productive ideas?
again _ can any machine do what “Abelton live” is doing?
heavy sampling abilities + seq triggering on the fly/on the grid.

who the hell uses 512mb of samples at once?

that will be me... its more like 300mb... that is the sample size of my show. very complex. i guess i could load the sampler again in the middle of the show, but that makes it 150mb in'it?

If what you need is Ableton Live, then why don't you just use Ableton Live??

I have seen plenty of shows using Live and have never seen a crash onstage.
Contrary to what your first post said....THE MPC DOES CRASH. After all, the MPC itself IS a computer.
Search this forum and you'll find tons of posts about the MPC crashing.

In fact, I have Ableton Live that I run on a slow computer (Mac G3, 400mhz) and it has crashed MUCH LESS than my MPC has.

Luckily, my MPC has never crashed on stage for me. :wink:
