shit...

I turned my mpc2000xl on and now this fukor won't recognize my scsi devices (cd-r drive and zip). I did not take the scsi cable off while the mpc was on or anything so I can't figure why nothing is working. On top of that it is movig really slow with loading almost like a PC or something. What can I do? Anybody know of any recommended service centers or anything...I have access to the floppy drive but this shit sucks because all of my files are saved on zip and programs I used saved on cd-r...

first off you probably want to find someone with a zip and pc so you can backup those zips. i would try to boot from the original os floppy. then try loading some of the sounds from floppies. once you have a backup of the zips (so you can stop panicking). i would turn everything off try again with just the zip drive hooked up. try a new blank zip and try to format it and see if you can load sounds from floppy and save them to the new zip. first things first, make a backup of your zips! also do you have the mpc and zip drive and cdrom and anything else that is connected on at least good real surge protectors (not just power strips) or preferrably running off of a ups? power surges zap things all the time. make sure your gear is safe. spending 100 for a ups is definately worth it.

I spent four hours trying everything possible to test for the root of the problem and here are the results...

1. Unhook all cables from my zip, cd rom and mpc.
2. Test scsi connection from cd rom to mpc: able to load sounds from this source and scsi device apparently recognized...
3. Test zip drive with its cord and still same "no scsi device" error message.
4. mpc speed back to normal when cd rom hooked in alone and slow as #@!$ when hooked with the zip.

My final conclusion: The cd rom and zip were running to the mpc thru a scsi chain (the cd rom being the direct connection). So I imagine it is safe to assume that there is no disk corruption, but more than likely a faulty 25 to 50 pin cord that is the culprit for this madness...

Will find another cord, test it out and thanks for the words of wisdom. Will certainly back up all of my projects for security purposes from here on out...
