MPC without a PC

ok, i've got a serious learning curve to deal with, and was looking for a bit of advice.

Im trying my best to read this manual from front to end and work all the steps in the process, problem is the only PC i have access to is at my job and the section on loading programs deals with CDROM and im not using that, hell, i don't even have the disc...i do have the red zip disc with the original sound library. I have a bunch of zip disc and im not sure if theres beats, samples, or both on them... what exactly does the zip save? sounds, complete beats, or samples...the guy i inhereited this MPC from would put a disc in this thing and just pull up beat after beat on his, im doing the steps i've read but im not pulling up his tracks, any ideas?

Read the xl manual pages on what types of files are what (aps - all - pgm
- seq - wav - snd - mid) and read the loading/saving chapters again
WHILE pushing the buttons and paying close attention to the screens that
show up. It's all there, don't worry.

What does a PC have to do with it? I don't use a computer with my MPC...

Learn how PGM/DRUM/SEQ files work together. I'm not going to type it up. Maybe someone else will.

if i ever do any recording or sampling i always do it to the mpc. then import the snds to my pc. i use ableton live to fuk with loops.

MID files are sequences, these play out the sounds on the pads.

PMG files are programs, these set where each sound will be on the pads.

Load one of each of them up and press play. You should hear a beat.

^Make sure the midi sequence goes with the program or you'll hear wacky trip-hop type shit go on.

That can sometimes lead to very interesting new songs though .

ok, i've been trying this for a couple of days now. I am loading the .aps from each zip disc and i am learning a bit about the the different type of files, but when i pull up the .aps and press play i only hear o portion of the track that my buddy would pull up. All the right sounds are there but things are overlapping and whatnot. They also seem to cut off after a couple of bars. sorry its always confusing learning a new peice of gear, especially when the manual doesnt help. thanks
