Akai DPS 12 and a MPC 2000 XL

Who out there uses this setup? Is this board worth the purchase? Any known problems?

i use one with my mpc.some of the cons are.. that if you have an internal scsi HD it can be pretty noisey.. if your recording vocals near it. another thing is it only has a total of 6 INs so if you have the 8-outs on the mpc or are planning on getting them you can only use up 6 at one time. the pros are that the interface is pretty similar to the mpc so if your familar with your mpc you should have no problem getting around the dps..also MESA works very well via midi with the dps i use it to save my parameters of my mixdowns and it allows me to comeback and tweak it (im still trying to learn mesa im sure there are more useful features in it) ....hope some of this info will help...peace

i have this setup too... i def. like it even tho i hardly use it cuz i reallly have no need to record my tracks lately and if i do its just usually straight to my shitty soundcard on my pc just to show people a rough draft... but 1 thing thats real cool is if you still wanna work with your computer to fine tune shit you can get a program called deepstripper for free and all you have to do is save a beat as a backup instead of a regular audio cd on the dps.. and you can burn the tracks to your computer using nero and then load them up in deepstripper and deepstripper turns them into wav files .. so you can just load them up into a multitrack program like cubase or sonar etc. and it would be like you just recorded them in there with a soundcard.. u need a cd drive for your dps tho...peace

yes, i use this setup as well (DPS-12i and MPC-2000xl). sometimes wish it had the old paint job to match the MPC. definitely get one with an internal drive (not sure if there's still ones floating around with Jazz drives or whatnot), though it is a bit noisy as stated. very happy with what i can do with it, i can't say that a newer model with more tracks would be any better. you can do so much with this machine if you know it well. not having eight inputs shouldn't be too much of a problem, i would think you might want to go through some sort of channel first instead of straight from the MPC. may warm it up a bit. absolutely a great recorder, how much can you get one for? i've always lusted after the DPS-16, but can't see the need for it...

DeepStripper - i've always thought the low point of the DPS-12 is that it doesn't write .wav files. instead of using DS though, couldn't you just burn stereo or mono tracks at a time in write mode (by assigning them to 11/12), then copy these to the PC as .wav files from disc using Nero, MusicMatch, etc?

thanks for the info fellas. I just got one for $275 on ebay from this chick who claims her husband bought it brand new back in 1997 and died a week later. she sez it has an internal Jaz drive. I been using a old Tascam 788 8 track for a minute now. I suppose this is a upgrade...

i think making a backup and loading in in deepstripper is alot easier and faster... but you could do it that way...i dont see why you would since deepstripper is a free program..

get rid of the jaz and get a scsi internal. There are all over ebay. goto the yahoo dps group for info on compatible drives. Deepstripper is rugged also. I love it. Its great if u have a cdrw drive so u can keep backin up to the same cd. ITs real easy to use.

you can get a cheap digital converter and get 8 tracks rolling at once. go out of the mpc spdif out, into the box and come out opticle in the dps12.

I have a DPS16 and MPC200XL setup in current use still and I recommend them highly, my old mate used to run a DPs12 and MPC2000 and he loved it, but there are better options out there like roland's and yamaha's if u wanna really upgrade.

Hey if u get one of these, do you even need a mixer, or does the DPS act as a mixer?

Yes. u can basically do it all in the DPS. track your beats add vocals and mix it all in there, the effects are really good too. but again i prefer the DPS16 and the Roland 1824

I do use a Yamaha AW16G with my MPC 2000.

I quite love my Yamaha cuz I just hate to work with computers....

I recommend the AW16G to anyone looking for a nice and quite cheap recording cosole.

Yeah the AW, thats what I use. I love that machine, I have bearly stratched the surface of it but its deff poweful. But on the flip side the new rolands have TDM plug in support with the VSF-3 cards. So I would look into the vs2000/2400 if I was in the market for a new hardisk recorder.

Thanks for all the input fellas. But im selling it (DPS12). In fact I got it listed in the for sale section of this forum. The backlight is out. a minor repair. I m letting it go for $375.00 .I just came up on a Tascam 2488 24 track jumpoff
