mpc midi organization

When using the mpc with other sound modules and a motif like i do. do you guys standarized ur midi channels..I have motif midi a 1-16 and the other modules midi 1-8b and 8-16b on the other..My problem is sometimes it gets confusing. Remember u may have non midi drum tracks in there as well.... What templates or ideas do u use so things look a bit more organized and not all over the place.. Hope u know what im asking

i guess it depends on which order you record the tracks. my synth is on channels 1-7b and my proteus is 8-16b. then my other module is 1-16a

but when i record i usually do my drums on the first few tracks. then after that i start bringing in instruments. so in a way its organized. i know my drums are usually the first 4/5 tracks...but before i record my beat into c.e.p., i always name the tracks. may be out of order but at least i know which is which..

no templates...i hope i was on topic cause the question was kinda confusing...

write the name of each intrument you used for each track...lets say i used 12 tracks using my motif rack i would put --- track 1: 63/32/18, track 2: 63/4/22, etc..... i dont know how to save my midi files so when i load a beat all the sounds would automatically load up on the motif but i know there is a way...

yeah u were on topic.... I need to come up with a scheme myself. Imma try midi A (motif) 1-16 planett phat midi channel B 1-8 on tracks 17--24 and jv1080 midi channel B 25-32....non midi tracks 33 and up..seems silly because there may be tons of empty tracks in between this all..but to work on a track and have a motif syth on track 10 and then have a jv 1080 piano on track 11 confuses me when turning the midi channel cause that qucik i forget to dial up the proper midi channel

wish u can save template so when u go to work its already there..i guess you make one and when u finish creating a track ..rename it so the template stays..WOW i think i'll do that

yea i understand what you mean. its really just memory man. once you get used to which modules are on which channels it wont be a big deal you know? but i know which is on which so it isnt hard for me you know? but the order i record in is usually the same for every beat so it aint too difficult for me...

Smooove u mean to tell me that u always come up with the instramentati up on in the same order..U never jump to the bassline first, or hear a melody in ur head and wanna hit that first..Like u said once i start it i'll be alright i guess...

oohh dont get me wrong. it changes sometimes! sometimes when im workin wit a sample and i find that first, thats on Track 1. After that I follow the normal way....start the drums on Track 2 and move up from there. I rarely use more then 4 tracks for my drums unless i have a few percussion instruments. so it still dosnt really get confusing to me. but yea it happens sometimes. to tell you the truth man, doin it the way you described (planett phat midi channel B 1-8 on tracks 17--24 and jv1080 midi channel B 25-32....non midi tracks 33 and up) might make it more confusing unless you can really memorize where you place things.

my layout is usually this 90% of the time. ill list them in order (track 1 first, 2 second...etc)

Kick
Hats/Open Hats
Snare
Kick2 (if I layer)
Snare2 (if I layer)
Percussion
Melody/sample
Bass

etc.......then go from there

I actually ran in my studio and did a template with what i mentioned above...Nah i think it wont be...I now know anything motif is 1-16 and so forth.. where as before i had everything everywhere...Smoove u seem like a cool cat, ive seen tons of ur post..i wish u the best in ur endeavors along with everyone else here who has a vision..I spent the last two weeks getting technical setting up convieneient ways to make recording and the music making process easier..I actually look forward to making music again Standardcy is the way to go..You can record in the dark when this happens..Not only that when i blazed its not greek anymore

and since we're speaking of making the recording process easier...a tip someone gave me (i think here) was to set your gear up in such a way that everything is within arms reach. i rearranged my stuff several times and finally found a way thats comfortable. it helps a lot......that was off topic but you spoke of making things convenient so theres a tip

lol...did it ..I got a patchbay which i have access to my VS 1880 inputs, compressor,art dps mic pre, just patching a cable can save so much time Whats ur e-mail i'll send u a pic of my set up

yea. i dont have enough gear to need a patchbay yet, but i've looked into them. i heard they make things much easier. dont gotta break your back to look behind your stuff everytime you wanna re route something...

how long you been makin music?

Sounds cliche'ish but i been making music for a while about 12 yrs, im 32 now..Always had a passion for it. Its in me. Im afraid to stop..I was a emcee too, nasty as hell and i stop cause rappers were talkin about bullshit and i was like **** this...and now that its going back to the basics, i dont have the desire to do it any more..I dont want that to happen with my production abilty..Thats my sanity. I had my mpc since 98 so u would think i know everything about it..NOT! i sequence, sample and save..lol
I know lil tricks here and there but for the most part i may ask questions that to someone may seem like im a novice at this.. Im actually learning everyday, my cuz is Shan (Bridge) fame and i'll pick his brain as well..
I dont have a huge set up, but the way machines are built today who needs one..I think the motifes, the MPC, and a good recorder like My VS1880 there no excuse for not being able to bring something to the table..

man to be honest i aint been using hardware for long. i started feb last year with the help of the people at this forum. i've learned a lot. hopefully i aint goin nowhere anytime soon but we'll see...im gone from work so ill pick this up when i get home

i start off with a template file. its basicly an .all file in the root dir of my zip disks (it should autoload as soon as you power up). i have gone through once to the first sequence, setting and labelling all my midi channels as required. and have done so for my sample tracks to. doing this method is good cause every song i make uses the same pad layouts etc. i do have a few different types stored on the zip for different purposes and/or configurations.....
