Note Variation

Correct me if I'm wrong but isnt the note variation slider only supposed to work when the green light is on? Because I set it and then turn the green light off and I can still use the slider to manipulate the sample wtih the green light off.

green light´s special purpose is

green light´s special purpose is altering a existing recorded sequence with the note variation, you may also take a look at the manual...;-)
