beefed up drums -

my boy nick was telling me to beef up the drums you have to layer then with the same one - i was wonderin if you guys had some other tips to beefin up drums! thanks.

He probaly meant to layer it with the same but with filter/e.q.You don't want to use the exact same drum because it really doesn't add much to the sound,except for maybe distortion.Experiment and you'll see what i mean.

Or layer a drum sound over an 808 kick to give it that extra bump...

When you add a 808 under some grimey drums it just adds more bass. I use 808 loops sometimes when I don't feel the track needs a bassline but still needs bass.

that is the type of mentality that limits creativity. 808's existed before lil jon. plus he's a cool beatmaker.

Just go search online somewhere for an 808 wave file. It's easy to get...

youve probably heard an 808 drum in most tracks that you want your drums to sound like.........using the above layering method. SHorten the decay on the 808, mess with the attacks to get it how you like.

Layer and eq before you sample it back into the mpc. Use whatever it takes to make it sound good. 808's are a nice starting point, but simply eqing your kicks can make it thump. Re-sampling with different sampler can have a nice effect if you choose the right requency. Experiment. There's no right or wrong way to create good music, just make it sound good!

here is a hint to getting good drum sounds if you dont have an actual drum set mic'd correctly....sample some old school motown records....its worked for ,what did rza say? "thousands of years"...but yeah, do that and then on the layering tip...experiment with layering different sounds over eachother...not just two different kicks or a snare with a clap (which you should do)...but try a girls breath with a kick.then maybe her moan or whimper with a snare..incorporate sounds that arent normally used with beats that you already think sound good.just **** with everything, but remember using little sounds to add texture to drum sounds wont make shitty drum sounds sound good.its like building..ok ive said too much...silence....

I have an 808. elmacaco is right, it's the easiest thing to get right from the gate. It's sitting at my friends house now cause he uses it for his house music.

Hyperprism, Quasi Stereo preset will give plumpness to your samples also.
But remember you start with str8 unprocessed clean samples you'll HAVE to layerand/or eq to make them punch.
