the only mpc with cd burning capabilities is the mpc 4000. other models DO NOT burn cd-r/cd-rw's..
if u wanna know will ANY SCSI external drive work with the mpc the answer is most of them do, ur best bet is taking a peek at the akai drive list located on akai's website (akaipro.com, under downloads for the mpc 2000xl or whatever) you could search for drives on e-bay but you should avoid getting raped by a "unauthorized akai drive seller". the best way to avoid that is by seraching for drives by description (ex: 9gb external scsi...etc) instead of "mpc 2000xl external...." (sellers add $75 to the price just for the akai mpc tittle) some sellers charge over $100 for a drive they put together themselves at home for less than $20 with parts they bought on e-bay (external scsi case,internal cd-rom or harddrive).
if your asking will a cd burner work as a cd-rom drive for the mpc the answers yes it will if the drive is compatible with the mpc.

According to both the PDF and insert supplied with the MPC2000xl there are cd-rw's compatable with this unit via SCSI. One is an old teac, one a plextor, etc. The problem being that this list was last updated 7/01 so the information no longer applies. So, if I were to go hunting on Plextor's sight and say found a SCSI drive there (px-w4012tse/sw) that is the most recent version of this drive, will it still work or will I get compatability issues with drive speeds?

external zips are the fastest as far as loading time is concerned. I think the best and fastests external drives are seagate and western digital. but i'm not sure. drive speeds are calculated at rps i think. (time =7200 rps/2pi or some shyt). i dont remember, plus i dropped out of a technical college so the formula may be inadequate. maybe u should buy one of my home made hard drives to be safe. i have a 2gb for $50. and a 9gb for $100.
if u wanna save a knot of cash built ur own hd. all u need is a external scsi case with termination , power supply and a coolin fan (price range is $5 - $30 on e-bay) than get urself an internal hard drive any seagate or western digital SHOULD work. u could get a 2gb internal hd on e-bay for a few dollars.
the rest is like putting a 3 piece puzzle together, the hardest part which iks relatively easy is setting the scsi id (termination) which u could find mad info on the net about.

This not the case. Hard drives are the fastest. Some compactflash cards that I use are faster than Zips. My Syquest drives are faster than Zips. Zips are certainly fasters than floppies, but are actually the slowest thing I have.
As far as the speed, you are only going to be loading up to 32Meg at once. How fast do you need it? It's not like you are going to be streaming data or doing hard disk recording. There are a lot more important things to think about (like making good music).

ur probably right but my external zip in particular is faster than the hd i use (go figure). But u do make sense on that last post. alot of new breed cats are so concerned with stuff they dont need (like a 18gb hd for a mpc..lol) i have a 9gb and i have possibly tens of thouasands of sounds plus hundreds of sequences and a bunch of songs saved and i aint even use up 2gb yet.
if i could go back i would've never bought the hd, instead i would've bought an internal zip off e-bay for a few dollars and a pack of zip disks.
cause in reality all u really need is a zip drive wit the mpc. though in the long run u might end up paying more on zip disks than a hd.
