Technical questions for the MPC2000xl and the MPC2000
By platypus571 Tue May 17, 2005 5:10 pm
my roommate owns a 2kxl which had a floppy and external zip drive, but the external constantly got the crap beat out of it and eventually died from being transferred to/from studio and home, so we decided to put an internal zip into it - I'm not an mpc person, but know plenty about computers and electronics and decided it would be pretty easy since mpc's are essentially computers...so we bought the drive off of ebay(IDE zip 250, iomega), modded the power cord, set it up and plugged it in - hit load, and got ATAPI error - it works fine on a PC, but the mpc is having trouble reading it even with some config changes....any ideas?

You may need to get OS version 1.20 It fixes some bugs when using ATAPI devices with the 2000XL, not sure about the classic 2000. What MPC are you using ?

its a 2kxl (as mentioned), OS 1.20 (upgraded from 1.14 to be sure that was not the problem), and it type=no disk on the load screen...btu as mentioned earlier, the zip drive works perfectly fine on a PC - have the jumpers set to master and the drive on the master port on the cable...

BE VERY CAREFUL WITH THE UPGRADE TO 1.20, unless you want to use an internal cardreader and be able to use 1 gig cards in one partition, there is no need to upgrade to 1.20, in fact it has caused trouble for a lot of peeps here on the board.

still nothing...anymore tips? when i switch to the load screen it says "atapi error" and wont read...when i put a disk in the light flashes quickly as if its trying to read, then flashes slowly as if its on stand-by or some such..not getting anything out of the mpc - constantly says theres no disk there, don't know what else to try, except maybe an idecord for a single device (i have a 2-device cord now),if that gets me anywhere I'll post, otherwise, anymore tries would be appreciated

The best thing that can be said is check this link and recheck your work http://mpc2000xl.com/storage.htm thats if your talking about the 2000xl and not the 2000. GOOD LUCK!!!!!!

I've been reading that same thing alot also, seems that peeps are upgrading just to be upgrading and don't know JACK about the actual file besides it's version number. Then they don't have a back up plan to go back to 1.14. I went back to 1.14 because of my ignorance of the file.

I don't need to know yet, but when I get my card reader I will ... where can I find the differences between 1.20 and 1.14 ? The old akaipro website used to outline the changes / fixes, but now they have is that page with all OS's for all their products, and it doesn't tell you jack ...
mpc2000xl.com haven't updated the bug fixes page with the new os, so is there anywhere else that has the info?

Lampdog is right. ALOT of people upgraded to 1.20 without reading the details/caveats. You may not need to upgrade, but if you do, you should definitely have way to restore the old OS in case 1.20 doesn't work out. I suggest burning the 1.20 OS to a CD, copy your existing OS to floppy, then use an external SCSI cdrom to load up the new OS. If it bombs out on you, load the old OS using the floppy.
