Technical questions for the MPC2000xl and the MPC2000
By ripple Wed May 18, 2005 5:40 pm
Would this http://shop.store.yahoo.com/directron/fa402a.html card reader work in my 2kxl? It's ATAPI compliant, but as it has multiple drives, i'm not sure if my mpc will boot from it, and from which drive will it boot?
I know i'd be better off finding a scsi model but they're so hard to find. if anyone has one for sale, email or pm me please.

looks like a USB drive to me..... I don't think it will work.

I would cop the one that Sander posted in this thread:

http://www.mpc-forums.com/viewtopic.php?t=25707

Quite a few people on the site have gotten this drive to work.

Do yourself a favor... do a SEARCH. It's all over the forum...
And btw, where the **** did you see it's "ATAPI compliant", when page's name is 7in1 USB CARD READER? :?

Check the card readers in my thread here ...

http://www.mpc-forums.com/viewtopic.php?t=29966

They all work and are, as far as i know, the only available IDE / ATAPI drives around. There is the PCD-47 but that is SCSI and is a harder to find.
But yeah, if you need more info, theres' shitloads in this forum if you just search for 'card reader'.

Try this one:

http://www.synchrotech.com/products/card-rw_32.html

I bought one and installed it in my 2kxl, and it worked with no problems. It saves and loads much faster than a SCSI ZIP drive.

Hold your horses, it was on a distributor's site with that descr., but i can hardly pass my login and pass to everyone on this site can i?
I guess it's ATAPI for the disk drive, USB for the card, that 'd make make sense.

By now I ordered the PCD-47, only problem is still how will i boot from this?
Is it even possible if it's not ATAPI?

An mpc2kxl does not boot from disk. the PCD-47 has to be connected to the internal scsi ports of your MPC.

I'd advise against using the SCSI card reader, and just use and IDE or ATAPI card reader. The install is easy enough, and will save you the time of trying to figure out SCSI ID's and jumper settings. If you feel like you 'have' to use SCSI, try putting the card reader into an external case. That way you can daisy chain up to 7 external SCSI devices. Jus my 2cents.

I've heard this before, but sorry, i really don't get it.
The question is: if i remove my floppy drive (i am booting from it as it won't start without it) what will i boot from once i installed the cardreader?

What OS are you runnng? You should not have to boot from a disc each time you start up.

1.14 i believe (the MPC is still in the lab, can't check right now but i'm pretty confident).
When i power up without the floppy it just says "Insert MPC2KXL boot disk!".
Maybe with the "Save" menu -> copy OS and do that on the F-ROM?
The again I thought the F-ROM was that expensive option, and I don't have it installed...
So you mean it should boot from an internal ROM or something?
All the peeps i know have 2K's, not XL's, and they boot from either ext ZIP or floppy.
I've been working with this floppy for ages, never really thought of another way until the cardreader issue came up.

I'm not sure about that man...... I've never had to use a boot disc with XL in 4 years, I don't even have one......
