is the xl w/ card reader the only model they make anymore?

my partner is in the market for some equipment. the only xl we can find locally is the one with the card reader & it retails for $1600. he doesnt need the 8 outs & he doesnt want the card reader cuz he's scared of computers & thinks thats too "computery"

hahah, and what does he want to use instead?? old floppys??? i can guarantee you that using anything other than a card reader is NOT safe. it's the safest storage there is. and fastest. and cheapest.

and he might need the 8outs later on, so i would buy it unless you find one used which would be alot.

No storage medium is 100% safe, backups are always recommended. That said, the cf storage medium is far more reliable than floppy disks or zip disks. The other advantage is that the drive contains no moving parts so less noise and less chance that it will wear out on you like floppy and zip drives do ( a search on "click AND death" will bring up enough 'horror' stories on zipdrives gone bad.

so far, i have never had a problem with my zip drive over the last few years, but im soon upgrading to a card reader also

i agree with what you guys are saying. i wish i had a cf in my mpc but im afraid to install it myself & too poor to pay someone. but my boy is one of those cats that's scared of computers & the fact that it's not a floppy or a zip weirds him out. guess he'll hafta get used to some new technology huh?
