SCSI out - CF in

I need a new computer, but it seems I cant get a new computer with SCSI connection so I need to find another way of transfering samples from my computer to my 2KXL with ease.

On the Studio Environment Board it was suggested I get a Compact Flash Reader and do away with my old Zip drives.

Now I am ready to do this but I know nothing about CF, and I was basically hoping that someone could give me a quick run down on what I should get.....even to the specific model...

One for the PC and one for the MPC2KXL.

I hope people can appreciate that this isn't something I want to spend ages thinking about, I just want to get this all hooked up so that I can get on with making music again...I dont care if they are external, I just need to know what to get.

Is anyone using this method right now?

ya the internal mcd is the way to go. you can get the whole kit for the XL through VST (www.vstservice.com) and then get a usb cf reader for your pc for $20.

Am I to assume that you are currently transferring via SCSI to/from your MPC/PC? I could have sworn that on this site somewhere (when the tutorials were still free) I read that you couldn't/shouldn't do that.

U can not transfer sounds from the MPC to your PC via SCSI. Here are some choices to try:
1. PC=Floppy to MPC=Floppy
2. PC=Zip to MPC=Zip
3. PC=CD Burner to MPC=SCSI CD Drive
4. PC=OUTS to MPC=IN
5. PC=CF Reader to MPC=CF Kit


Hope that helps u out a little more.

Yeah just remember if you're using zips, floppies or cards, you gotta format them in the PC for them to be readable/writable in both the MPC and PC.

yeh am just doing MPC-Zip and PC -Zip.

Yeh i wont be getting it from there...I'm in the UK. I gotta find somewhere over here to get it.

What i need to know tho...is what makes the MPC one so much more expensive than the computer one..

I understood with Zip drives for the MPC, you need a termination switch on the back etc....that is the kind of thing i need to know about for CF and the MPC....can i just buy one from a computer shop?

Is it possible to have an external CF reader for the MPC?...coz all the ones I seem to be seeing are internal.

I guess the thing you're paying for in a card reader compatible with the MPC is the IDE/ATAPI interface ...Just 'cause its more of a specialised product, whereas theres' a much higher demand for USB drives. That just my guess, though.
Not sure about an external drive. I've never heard of it being done.

That is not completely correct. In fact, with OS1.2, you can just format removable drives on the MPC2000XL to be used by both the MPC and PC.

So you're saying if you format a CF card on an mpc running 1.2, it will work in a PC? So this is something Akai changed in the new OS compared previous operating systems?
