card reader

I just read a post where someone asked for specs to replace his floppy with a zip drive. One of the members said he has a multi-card reader instead. Can anyone explain what this is? And if you had one of these, what would your PC need to read/write these cards?

do a search for card + reader and use the + sign in the search..... there are several threads out there that cover this thoroughly....
