Do you need to hook it up to a speaker/mixer or does the sound just come out of the box? It may sound like a dumb question but i'm really considering buying one and i want to know everything about this machine before i purchase it. Any help would greatly be appreciated.

you have to hook it up to speakers. No audio gear plays the music out the box. You always have to wire shit up so that its going all to the speakers thru like a mixer.

Might be a good idea to peep the manual:

A sampler SAMPLES and plays back what you SAMPLE, unless it has an onboard ROM there will not be immediate sounds... ASRX have sounds, but even they have to be loaded via disk.

Download the manual and play the pads on the image of the MPC and your question will be no more. Then look at the image of the back of the mpc and you will see the truth.
