Akai IB-208P (meant for s2000 I think) - OK for MPC2000XL?

Hello all,

Some guy is selling the above on Ebay claiming it'll be fine for the MPC2000XL. I always thought the IBM-208P is the ONLY one usable in the MPC. He says the only difference is the cable, which he says he will provide for me. The picture of the IB looks slightly different to the pics I've seen of the IBM too, which makes me think he's talking ish.

Some advice before I buy would be very appreciated! I don't wanna buy and install and find I have problems.

The IB-208P is for the "s" series rackmount samplers. (S2000 i beleive)

According to Nick @ VST, this can be modified to fit an MPC2000/XL. You will need a different plate and a longer ribbon cable. The piece will not be able to be installed "as is" into the MPC2000/XL.

If he has the pieces to convert it, it might be possible. I would ask him, since he has the pieces, to convert it first, THEN sell it to you.

It is possible. I have modified the s3000xl IB-208P board for my MPC. You have to attach a new cable (floppy drive pc cable) and it works fine for me

Sorry bro. No pics. I'm just going by what was told to me. Best I could do is send you a pic of the IB-M208P. (none of the IB-208P)

They certainly look a completely different shape. How did you find fitting yours Nowald? Did you have to make any cuts? It looks much longer than the IBM and what about fixings? the top end (where the cable comes from) looks like it's lacking.

The MPC 8 output is attached on a metal board that's fit in your MPC. The s2000/s3000xl version doesn't fit in the mpc. You have to build in the output without the metal. You have to buy metal "nut" and fix it that way. Here is a quick picture to illustrate. * Sorry for my bad english

I just copped an 8 out board out of a S3000xl, the cable is not long enough, do you just make an extension or do you remove the cable from the board? Also the metal board is going to have to be cut and modified to brace the board properly. Would it be ok to put it in just with nut fastners rather than on the board, how solid is it with the nuts as opposed to a plate? Any help on figuring out this project would be great!!

@ mpz60: I removed the whole cable from the output board. I connect the output board without the metal board.. It is solid enough without the nuts. Good luck

Can you describe in detail how I modify the Floppy Cable? I see it has a bunch of spikes piercing through the cable when I remove the black plastic piece on the top of the cable end attached to the board, do I just pull this cable off and slide another cable over the spikes in the same order? Any help is appreiceated!!

i got dodged into buying the wrong one for my MPC about 2 years ago.. they actually look differnt.. i have photo's of both and they have slightly differnt circutry as well as the plates and cables ....when i put this question up then there wasnt too many people who were keen on me doing it.. i ended up selling back on ebay for about a 300% loss...

and i still only have two outs... dammit...

You have to first remove the plastic piece. Sou will see the cable with spikes pierced. Remove the cable. You have now the board with spikes. Don't forget to watch out if the red line on the cable at the left or the right side is.

The new cable you have to attach is a floppy drive cable form an old pc or something. Cut this cable like the picture:


Now you have a good cable en the board with spikes. You have to pierce the cable. This must we done with huge power, you can't do this with your hands.

I used this, I don't know what is the name in english:


Be VERY carefull! Put the cable on the board with the red line at the right side. Then put the plastic piece at the cable. Put the board with the cable and plastic piece on it in the thing at the picture and put slowly pressure on it. You now pierce the cable with the spikes. Again sorry for my bad english

Props, sounds like a lot of work for a little saving! I think I'll def go the IBM route. On that note, an IBM 8 out board went for £180+P&P on Ebay today! It's £200 new?!?!

Crazy people on Ebay, thinking they're getting a bargain.

It is 10 min work.. But you can save a lot more money. I bought a s3000xl voor 200 dollar with the eb16 fx unit. I removed the outputs and the eb16 card and sold the empty s3000xl for 150 bucks. So I got my eb16 and 8 outputs for 50 dollar 180 pounds is imo way to much. Buy and old s3000xl for cheap, modify that 8 outputcard, sell the s3000xl and you saved yourself a lot of money!
