layering drums...

hi i just have a quikc simple question, i've read the tutorials and everything but cant seem to find an answer..

how do you layer 2 sounds together so they play at the same time? i'm particularly looking to do this for DRUMS..

for example: layering a pretty dull snare, with a tomtom to make it more sonorous and full sounding

any suggestions? and..is there a specific term that is used to describe this? I always thought it was called multisampling but im not sure.. thanks

No that's not multisampling.

It's real easy, just record your snare on track 1:

s---s---s---s---s---s

Then, stop your sequence, switch to a new track (say.. track2) and record your tom right behind your snare...

t---t---t---t---t---t

so then, you end up with:

s---s---s---s---s
t---t---t----t----t

You can also trigger 2 sounds with one pad. I forgot what screen it's in though, i'm not near my MPC.
In a screen where you can see your pad/sound, you have to select your snare, then scroll to "simult" and find a sound that goes well with the snare. You can hear the results while you're in the screen too.

I do most of my layering via Step Recording.

Another thing that I do is program the same patterns in my other drum machines and have my MPC control the start/stop on those devices. On my MPC I will have all the drums centered and on my ES-1 or my 202 I will have those sounds hard panned or automate the panning. Then I'll change the drum sounds in realtime after each measure on those other drum machines. I find that doing it this way get's me much deeper hits and more of a surround element for my ambient tracks.

To play two (or three) sounds from one pad press shift/program-drum1(2,3,4)- hit the pad you have the first sample assigned to- cursor down to mode:normal- change normal to simult-cursor to also play note:--/off-change to the pad you have the other sample assigned to.

3. Scroll to MODE
4. Set to 'Simult'
5. Scroll and select which pads you want to also play when that pad is pressed.

Or you can overdub sounds behind the snares by recording the snares, pressing overdub, and recording the next sound.

ahh...that overdub mode is obvious i shouldve thot of that...as for the 2 pads at the same time thing, thats wat i really wanted to kno. thanks for the replies

wow i didnt know there was an overdub mode....that really makes things a lot easier....to layer my drums i always would just go into step edit and add the second drum sound....this program thing will make everything a lot easier......learn something new everyday, thanks to everyone in this forum!

Hold on, there's actually an 'overdub mode'? You're not just talking about overdubbing sounds while a sequence is playing using the OVERDUB + PLAY keys are you?
