MPC Isolated Midi Channels

Hello.

I saw the recent post and replies on MIDI with the 2000xl, which did not quite resolve the below question.

I've got a pretty simple setup-

Oxygen 8 keyboard
PC running Fruityloops
MPC2000xl
Oberheim Matrix 1000

I've got the PC MIDI out running into one MPC in, and the Oxygen 8 running into the other IN. The MPC MIDI out runs to the Matrix 1000.

Oxy 8 is set to MIDI channel 6, as is the Matrix 1000. Soft thru to OMNIB in the MPC to pass the Oxy8 information to the Matrix 1000.

I've got a full program of sounds loaded on the MPC. I've got a sequence loaded in FL, with the FL MIDI out playing specific notes on MIDI channel 1.

What I want is to be able to play the sequence in FL, have it trigger drum sounds in the MPC, and be able to play the Matrix 1000 using the Oxy8.

After assigning MIDI ins and thrus, what I hear is one of the following:

1. The Oxy8 plays the Matrix 1000, and the drum sounds in the MPC simultaneously, while FL is playing the MPC drum sounds.
2. The Oxy8 plays the Matrix, but no sound on the drums, and vice versa.

I'm guessing the solution is quite simple, but I'm not quite sure where to look. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Remove the connections from the MPC, sell it and buy a $100 sampler.
Unless you are using The Famous Sequencer(tm) of the MPC, then you are really wasting cpu cycles, money and time on such a limited inflexible configuration.

The other solution, since you did not state you want to record what you are playing on the Oxy8 into the MPC, is to connect the Oxy8 directly to the M1000 and play it that way. That will solve it.

Finally, to fully work out the issues with the existing connections requires understanding of the 'OMNI' (which I have never found a legitimate use for), 'soft thru', Single and Multi midi mode of the MPC2000XL. I think there is a tutorial at mpc2000xl.com in regards to this. I would not hazard a guess at this time.

Actually, I plan to use the MPC sequencer.

I have a song I wrote in FL a couple years ago. My plan is to first export all the sounds, then convert the FL track to MIDI, then dump that track into the MPC sequencer. This is a project I am doing to work out all the bugs in my setup, and get a good handle on the process before I start making new music again.

So response #1 was useless.

I DO plan to record notes from the oxy8 into the MPC. So response #2 was useless.

Before the original post, I tried the various 'OMNI,' 'soft thru' and single/multi mode settings. I thought I could look on this forum for more insight than shown in the manual. I'll take a look at the tutorial; so response #3 was only 2/3 useless.

Thanks for the mental exercise of attempting to answer your crude question. You could have received a much better answer of you actually stated from the outset all the information you SUDDENLY decided to supply AFTER I intentionally probed it from you:

Then why not just DO that? That in itself is a fairly easy conversion in a just a few minutes and, most importantly, does not require convoluted midi connections/settings.

That is FUNNY, but in MANY situations here true.

I see both of your points, and how my initial post could be vague. My intent was not to bog the post down with too many details.

I also see your point that perhaps it's the process I need to revise, and not my MIDI settings.

I'll try to solve the problem on my own, in my own time. If I still have issues, I'll return with clearly formulated questions when I have the time in my life to compose them properly.
