Technical questions for the MPC2000xl and the MPC2000
By Metaphysician Sat Feb 04, 2006 1:22 am
Yes Ive done my search and found no topic/post on what Im about to ask.

Basically I have my MPC sync'd with protools.
Im playing back a loop on the MPC and a loop on protools.
They are playing in time with each other.
The only problem I have is the MPC loop stops every 4 bars waits for another set of 4 bars to go buy then starts playing again. The protools loop doesn't stop it continues to play.

Am I missing something here. Ive checked my settings and to my knowledge everything is set up fine.

What exactly are you tring to do? Just playback both (mpc-pro-tools) in a loop? Or are you tryin to midi the two together?

Im trying to get both MPC and PROTOOLS to play in a continuous loop, seeing as sounds for the beat im making are both on MPC and PROTOOLS. Im basically just using the MPC to add more things to the beat and when I feel like I use protools to add things to the beat. Either way I will be putting both MPC sounds and PROTOOLS sounds together when Im done.

But I cant work properly because when Im playing back and trying to over dub so I can add more stuff to the beat the mpc will stop playing every 4 bars.

Which are you using as the sequencer? Sounds like you are tring to use both sequencers at the same time which is not going to work.

When I dont use both of them as sequencers at the same time they dont sync properly. E.G. If I make the MPC master and PRO TOOLS slave and start to play back the loop they are un-accurate and dont work together.

When I use both MPC and PRO TOOLS to control each other the loops are tight and accurate. Only problem is the loop on the mpc will stop every 4 bars for 4 bars then join in again on time.

sooo.. one has to be slaved to the other inorder for 2 sequencers to be in sync..

i'm guessing mpc is slaved.. i.e. sending machine control/beat clock to mpc.

anyways,

on the transport bar in protools make sure 4/4 = 1/4 notes, or else your bar won't really be a bar, if that make sense.. i had this problem before and didn't see the obvious. Is your sequence in mpc the same amount of bars as in pt?

By Metaphysician Wed Feb 08, 2006 6:09 pm
Yep definetly. 4 bars looped on the mpc, 4 bars looped on protools. 4/4 - 1/4 on both mpc and protools. In mpc midi/sync Ive set the mode to midi clock for sync (in) and the midi clock for sync(out) also Ive set mmc on both (in) and (out) ON. If you get what I mean and protools and the mpc play 100% accurate where as If I make either mpc or protools master and the either slave its not accurate at all.

just a thought here .. B/C im not running pro tools ...
but you have a loop in P/T and a loop in the MPC...
why not save the loop from P/T..load it into the MPC...
create your beat with the MPC..and then record the beat
linear into P/T ... :?:

Everyone has their own method really. The way I do it is use the MPC for just my drums snares hi hats etc. Basically the beat to the tune. I use pro tools for everything else. So I do alot of playing back, thats why I need them to loop constantly together.

cant you trigger your sounds from pro tools with the MPC??
then you wouldnt have to use 2 sequencers .. just the MPC sequencer
and still have use of all your sounds ... seems like that should
work ... it works with a 400$ soft synth its gotta work in P/T

I use my midi keyboard to trigger the sounds in protools. The midi keyboard is connected to the mpc. But I dont record the notes I play in the mpc, I use protools to record all my midi. When Ive made a beat I like on the mpc I record it into protools then finish of the tune by adding all my strings and effects etc.

i feel you now .... but it seems like your makin extra work for yourself that
way ... ?

so you make the groove of the track (the beat / bassline) on the MPC
record that into P/T to add .. strings ..brass or what have you .. am i trackin so far???

Its been a couple weeks since I last replied to this post. I didnt realise anyone replied to my last message but anyway since then Ive just been making all my music using pro-tools. The mpc is just sitting there and I only use it for triggering sound on my RTAS in protools. e.g. drums etc.

But now I wish to abuse my mpc, I saw a video from sparq I think where he was showing users how to use reason as a sound module with the mpc. I done this with my 2000xl and it works fine but I also have alot of good rtas instruments which can load as standalones or in protools.

I basically want to do the exact same thing sparq done with reason and the mpc but with protools and the mpc. Ive tried many different ways but I cant seem to get each (midi) rtas in each track on protools to record into seperate tracks on my mpc. When I record midi onto 1 track on the mpc then change to another track and record midi on another midi channel, what ive recorded from the 1st channel plays along with the new data ive just recorded.

Basically I want do exactly what sparq done in reason on protools but in a way that it would work on protools since reason and protools are different sequencers

I don't think you can use ProTools in the same way as you can use Reason. What I mean by that is, ProTools, by design and definition, is multi-tracking/recording software, with MIDI sync capabilities. Reason, is like having a bunch of sound modules, synths and samplers in a rack, but in software form... basically 'soft synths'... The sequencer that's included with Reason, is mainly for people who just have a MIDI controller or a regular ASCII computer keyboard. If you have an MPC, I suggest you use it to sequence with, then dump everything to ProTools. In my honest opinion, the MPC's sequencer is a million times better than any computer sequencer by far. Reason being that an MPC is made specifically for sequencing, whereas a computer kinda has to be 'made' to be a sequencer... hope this helps.

peace,

Set up your soft synths in protools on Aux tracks or instrument tracks in protools. Setup a midi track for each soft synth track in protools. Assign the Midi track outputs in protools to your soft synths. Assign the Midi track inputs to whatever you want them.

On the Mpc the outputs of your Midi should correspond to the inputs on the protools Midi inputs. Put the Midi tracks into record (Shift to put more than one track in record) Each Midi channel on the MPC should now play a different soft synth on protools.

Use Midi Beat clock out of protools to sync the MPC.

The MPC is now your MIDI sequencer and when your done just record the MIDI data from the MPC into protools.
