zip disc issues!!

i've been using a zip disc for about 3 months. i went to put the disc in today to load a song i did and the shit would'nt load the disc at all after several attempts. it said " timed out" or something to that effect. i've accepted that all my songs on the disc are lost. i wanna know what do ya'll guys do when that shit happens? how to ya'll prevent it? is it best to record those songs on cd after they are done immediately or something? any insight would be appreciated.

try unplugging and plugging your zip drive back in.(if its external)that may due the trick
