IOMEGA are JUNK!!!

**** iomega! just talked to them they do not support mpc use of their drives!

the windows OS reinterpretes the names in 8.3 format (which shortens the names to xxxxxxxx.xxx (hence named 8.3)).
so if you dont plan ahead until your disks **** out, youre gunna have a really hard time trying to back them up.

im naming everything real short from now....

**** iomega.... time to find something new...

Only Iomega makes internal drives, and 8.3 format is normal for the MPC.

Try a different brand scsi drive. I and everyone else I know always renames their files IAW 8.3 convention anyway..

I use CKRENAME for batch renaming, it works fine when I have many samples to hook up quick fast and in a hurry..

Yeah, it's very useful for real.. I use it ALOT.. I find lots of little useful junk like that on the net. Stuff that makes music life a little easier you know..

I bet not many other people know of little things like this that can make life simple..

are you talking about the xl? ive got old plain mpc2000. when i put the files into the pc, it changed the names for me, and now the mpc doesnt recognize them.....

yeah, from now on its 8.3 format for me, but this is the first time in, what 5 years or whatever i came across this. are the other drives reliable? im thinking of getting a cheap g3(socheap) just for backing stuff up.

Part of the issue that Akai uses a modified DOS format for their disk sturcture and it is not exactly compliant with PC (or Mac) naming features.

Akai never really indended for users to exachange data between computers and PC's. As a matter of fact, when the MPC series was first developed, using computers for music was hardly a twinkle in anyone's eye.

is mac better for backing up?

You can backup data using damn near anything method you choose..

what are you guys talking about ? I installed a zip drive in my MPC and i go back and forth between it and my PC to organze files

Not every ZIP disk is stable. I have problems with Iomega ZIP Disks but when I use Fuij I have no problems going back and forth..

I have a scsi iomega zip drive hooked up to my mpc and an ide zip drive in my pc. When I pull the zip disk out of the scsi drive and put it into my pc zip drive it tells me to insert a disk when I try to access the files. Can an IDE drive not read disk filled from a scsi drive?

It is all in the format of the disk. They can read both.. I format my ZIP on the PC then I can use it on both machines freely. If u format on MPC the PC cannot read the format..

i had a hard drive which died, and then i bought a 250zip. now all the disk are dieing one by one...so iwas trying to back up to pc and the pc changed the files somehow.
does mac use the 8.3 format? i got a chance to buy a g3 (which is all scsi) for $200australian(probably $130us)a 400mhz...

i used to have a pc before but it got blown up by a dodgy VACUUM cleaner! i use my girlys laptop for the net...
