Swapping ZIP for IISDMC Card Reader???

Whats up guys,

I own a mpc-2000xl with an internal Zip 100. Well to make a long story short, im tired of zips and all the hassle. So i decided to make a change and upgrade to a card reader. I decided to purchase the IISDMC card reader from http://www.amtron.com/reader/iisdmc.htm.

But i have a few questions i wanted to ask a few of the experts:

How big of a job will it be to switch out the Zip 100 to the new cardreader? Do i just unplug everything from the zip and plug it in the same way to the card reader? Will there be anything else i have to do? And how should i open my mpc? By removing the 15 screws at the bottom or thebig screws on the Top cover?

What OS should i use? Im currentley using 1.14. should i upgrade to 1.20? Or is 1.14 compatible?

Im sorry for all these questions, but my mpc is my baby and i dont wanna make an mistakes!

If you are not even sure how to open it then u should take that into consideration and let someone with the knowledge do it for you. But since u have the XL u remove all the screws on the bottom to install it. I couldnt get that link to work but if it runs on the same power source and is IDE then it should work out just fine with no problems. But its a few on here who have actually done it so they can give you more information.

Well ive built atleast 20+ computers in my days part by part. So im quite confident i can handle this without having to pay the $$$ to a proffesional.

I just want to get some advice and know exactly what to expect before i crack open my mpc. So any one whos done this process please give me some knowledge and answer my questions!

the search on these forums is pretty bad and theres so much shit to wade through, the more we actually help people out, the easier it actually gets to search later on.

Yeah ive seen those links before.

But they dont cover ANYTHING about what O.S. to use. Also they just tell you how to swapp with a floppy. But im swapping an internal ATAPI Zip drive, so i assume the procedure is a little different.

Can someone who has done a zip to card reader swap hit me up with some info please.

It's easier when you have an ATAPI zip already installed. The card reader will use the existing cables. The whole process should take you like ten minutes.

I recently just got my 2k xl and I opened the case the 1st day (installing 32mb memory). It was a breeze, especially if you ever replaced parts on a computer. I also have an internal zip drive. After removing the bottom 15 screws, the zip drive was held in by two screws and had 2 wire harnesses that plugged into it. If only I had a CF reader to install at that time, all I would have had to do is swap out the drive, plug in the wires and tighten the screws.

It's akin to replacing an old CD burner with a DVD burner in a home computer.

I've just done the job on the 2kxl. It was remarkably easy. Drop the zip drive out, and slide the card reader in - connecting the two cables. You do need to undo all the screws on the bottom, plus the two holding the floppy/zip in.

With regard to the OS, im still using 1.14but ive upgraded and downgraded with no problem.

I would stick with 1.14 unless you plan on using bigger than 512mb cards (i think the limit is 1gb with 1.14), but its no big deal to upgrade and the worst that will happen is the memory card wont work. Personally i use 256mb cards (cheap and reasonable capacity)

I was procrastinating for about 3 months with the parts on my shelf before i did the job. Turns out that it was the easiest upgrade ever.

You'll do exactly what you jsut said and you'll be fine. Make sure though to also install the dylithium crstyals and you are set.

Do yourself a favor and stick with OS 114.

actually I think that link is for switching out a floppy. not for switching a zip.
