If you have an audio device with optical inputs, say a multitracker or an expanded sampler of some kind, the PS2 has optical out. This is great for grabbing pristine sound. Same goes for sampling DVDs and CDs on PS2!
Course, my uffin PS2's sound is messed up and I don't think the optical port works either. And Sony wants 98 bucks to fix! Ha! I'll play without sound for a while, thanks.

There is a Digital Output on/off settings in options on the PS2.
Turn it on. If that doesn't work THEN it might be bad.

Some games have sound previews in the options, some don't. Some older games (black bottom ps1) you can just place in any CD player and play trk 2-?? and you might hear audio samples and sounds from the game. Other than that you just have to go the old tried and proven route of line in on MPC.
