Have I damaged my baby?

Hi Forum!

I have a really big problem now and I dont know how i can solve it...

I bought a ZIP-Drive with a 25pin cable. So i thought i can hook it up my MPC2000, just as I did with my external SCSI-harddisk-
So I hooked it up and when i went to the "Disk" page my MPC didnt recognized nothing. The only thing that happened was that the there was "wait..." on the screen.
So i thought maybe its not working (i bought it used).

So I hooked my external SCSI-Drive up again and wanted to start making music. But as I went to the "Disk" page the same thing happened "wait...".

Even if no ZIP drive or harddisk is connected the MPC freezes and says "wait..." in the "Disk" page.

now i looked at the ZIP-Drive again and I think it could be that it is a paralel port cable and no SCSI....

If it is so, could this damage my MPC?

Does anyone know how I can get my external harddisk working again?

I'm confused to how you even got it to connect if it is a parallel cable. Can't fit a triangle is a round hole. Get what i'm saying? So chances are that you forced it in and made it fit yourself. Is this what happened? If so then you may have damaged it. Check out the pins and the SCSI connection on the MPC to see if any are bent or damaged.

it sounds like you blew the scsi fuse on your mpc, which can only be repaired by a skill electronics technician.

I really didnt have to force it. It was just fitting.
There´s nothing bent...
I dont really know the differences between the two cables: They just look the same.

So, pt3r, probably youre right. can this happen by connecting a cable?
Nothing changed, i waited and waited and tried and tried....
So I also thought that there is something damaged.
Do you think I have to send it to akai or any good electrician can do it?

Shiaaat, i dont have money right now, to get it repaired, but I need my external device for saving...

I´m gonna bring it to an electronics technician and ask.

So, for the future: How can I differ between parallel port an 25pin SCSI?
Because they look the same...

the scsi ones have 2 little dip switches on the back one is marked scsi id and can be set to 5 or 6 and the other switch is marked terminator and can be set to either off or on.

Ok, I know that SCSI-drives have ID-switches.
But the cables look the same. I mean, the 25pin-cables.

There are lots of connectors that look the same but are not for the same use.


Was your gear ON when you were doing all of this switching and swapping around?

No, I switched it off, before i did it...
Does that make a difference?
Poor MPC.

I hope this electrician in my town can help me.
I dont want to send it through the whole world.

If you knew that then why would you have thought it was a SCSI drive if it didn't have the switches?

Yep, from trying to hook up a parallel drive to scsi.

Parallel drives don't have id switches.

Poor dude!

Get it sent to a specialist if you're unsure.
