Any Mpc useres that don't use computer at all?

My computer is garbage. If I'm just sampling from vinyl do I need a zip drive and all that extra crap?? Also can you buy a new mpc2000xl with the extra memory already installed?

Some stores (Sam Ash) will throw in the memory sticks with a MPC2KXL purchase but they won't install it for you. I put a Zip 250 drive in mine after getting tired of searching through about 40 something 3 1/2 inch floppy discs laying around my room. I can't speak on the other options, but I would mos def get a Zip (250) put in it.

Sure, you can sample from vinyl with a stock 2mb RAM floppy drive MPC but you will be very unhappy when you actually figure out you can't do much with just that. As for the ZIP, it's a matter of opinion. Me, I like my ZIP250 and would never move back to floppy unless tied to a tree and legs cutoff. And the computer thing, the Xl can most definitely be used without a PC. Some stuff though you just can't do on an MPC2kxl and also some stuff is done alot faster on a PC/MAC, timestretching is a good example of a time consuming task depending on how big the sample is inside the MPC. There are many pro's and con's covered this in detail in this forum so I'll stop here.

pc for quik editing and program creation. not essential but it gets the flow happening alot quicker. from pc zip drive str8 into the mpc is also very quik to get your programz up and running.

So is there anybody here who makes beats using only there mpc and vinyl? Just curious?

i make beats just on the mpc using vinyl. i have sound forge but i try to stay away from my computer as much as possible. i mostly just use it for recording then burning to cd.

I only use the MPC and Vinyl, no computer programs. I have an external zip that I picked up for $25 on ebay. It's much easier to use and faster than the floppies. My MPC came with the extra memory, it's the studio plus model. I think the memory is a must, it gives more than enough sample time.

I dont use computers at all. I use the Mpc 2000(not the XL), zip, 1200's, dusty records, record on the tascam 688 8-track recorder and I monitor everything on an Aiwa Home Stereo. My thing is that I try to get my shits sounding butta on the MPC before i record it(I **** around with all the parameters until the beat sounds right.) I take a step back and listen to the dynamics....make sure all the sounds are in correct proportion. Cuz my ear is always the most important peice of gear in the studio. Computers are cool n all but im more into the older style of makin beats(I listen to mostly classic hip hop.) That "warm" feeling and that "dirty/gritty" sound everybody is looking for doesnt come from a computer(you can ask the older producers....they will tell you the same thing.) It comes from Analog gear. Its called tape saturation. The boom bap has been around for years....and the legends didnt use computers....its in the dusty records....but then again..thats how I make beats. I know some cats that know how to get their shit sounding right on PC's but they started off learning everything on a 4-track. Everybody has their own way....it took me 7 years to find mine..
