why is my audio "humming,fuzzy,etc"??

I just got a XL(internal zip)..used to use my old roommates regular MPC2000 back in the day so I am somewhat familiar with how to use it. Hooking it up is a whole other story. I am not too great at hooking up electronics,etc...but I did get it hooked up,reading a signal,and playing back samples. Only problem is..the audio seems a bit low..which means I must turn the volume up higher than I would think one should. This in turn..I suppose...gives the overall volume(and sample) a "humming" or "fuzzy" sounding background(which basically means...I am not using it until I fix this). I have tried playing with all volumes.(reciever,MPC Main,Rec Gain) I have it hooked up as the following: From the 1200 turntable(my sample source) I have it ran into a 1/4 adapter into the Record In into the MPC...then from the Headphone jack on the MPC I have it ran to the reciever(phono) using 1/4 to RCA splitter/adapter. This is the only way I could figure out to hook it up and actually hear back what I sampled. Any help is appreciated..and feel free to email me if you might have a solution or suggestion..thanks.

You need: turntable to pre-amp/mixer to MPC record in.
Headphone jack is for headphones, go to radio shack and get the right adapters and plugs for the line out of the mpc to your stereo.

Also it could be a grounding problem or electromagnetic noise ie, audio cables close to other electronics or power cords. As for grounding check the grounding wire on your turntable, it need to go to something like the grounding screw on the back of a mixer perhaps.

I tried running the turntable through the reciever..and from the reciever to the MPC. It was recieving a signal,and I could hear the record I was playing..but I could not hear what I sampled. ???

You can't be in the sample screen and play pads at the same time.

If you don't want to buy any extra gear (except for cables or adapters maybe) connect everything like this:

from Turntable to Receiver phono in.
from Receiver line out (sometimes called tape out and in the worst case if you don't have that phones out) to MPC record in.
from MPC stereo out to Receiver line in (could be CD, tape, aux etc input).

To sample switch the reciever to Phono. You hear the turntable (but not the MPC) thru the receiver.
Once you're finished sampling, switch the reciever to the MPC input (line in) and you can edit and play with samples.
