Memory-Floppy..Ram?

I'm kind of confused. What exactly does the RAM memory save? I know MPC's come standard with 2 MB Ram, but what for? Can samples just save straight to the floppy disks? or do they save to the Ram? In other words..... is sampling memory unlimited as long as you have floppies? Or is it limited to the amount of RAM you have? Sorry bout that, I don't even have a MPC yet, I JUST sent the money out for one... i'm actually a Motif man myself

sampling time is limited to how much RAM you have. the max RAM is 32mb, which gives about 350.4 seconds of mono sample time. half that for stereo sample time. . RAM stores the samples on the mpc while it is turned on but you must save to disk before you turn off the mpc. you can get 32mb for $10 on ebay

So basically the RAM just dictates how much time you can sample for ONE sample........ and then you can save it to a disk and use that time again?

NO, you can only hold a TOTAL of 350.4 sec of any amount of samples. the maximum amount of samples the RAM can hold is 256. you can have 256 sounds on the mpc at one time as long as the collective time of all the samples does not exceed 350.4 sec (or however much sampling time you have with RAM)

if you want to sample a sound which is 350.4 seconds long and reuse the sample time, you will have to sample it on the mpc then save it to disk and then delete the sound from the mpc RAM. if you reload a sample which is 350.4 seconds long onto the mpc RAM, you will have ZERO time left for sampling

well it depends how you make tracks. 350 seconds of sampling time is surprisingly long for one whole song worth of samples. and 256 sounds plenty of different samples for one song too. i doubt you will ever need more sampling time than this to make even the most complicated tracks

youll want a zip disk drive (internal or external)

you can get 100mb zips or 250 mb zips as far as i know

Any SCSI Zip drive will work? Cuz i see em pretty cheap online

1mb is about 10 seconds stereo if I am remembering correctly.

You can have multiple samples in the 32mb RAM. Soon as you fill up that memory you have no more for sampling or anything.

RAM in the MPC is dynamic, meaning EVERYTHING you do is in RAM.

SCSI zips aren't made anymore so 2nd hand is the only option I guess.
Just make sure the SCSI connetion is the same as described in your manual.
