milkshake/frontin

hi i have another question, which is the best way to acheive the same effect that the neptunes use in starting "milkshake" from kelis and "frontin" .. where they place the first note of their beat on each quarter note for one bar before the actual song starts? what i did was make my beat. copy it out. then sample it back in to a pad. and play it live for one bar on a sequence. however. it still doesnt sound as smooth as i like. is their a better way? like a sort of cut and paste method? or should i just keep on playin it live until i get it rite? i hope my question isnt too confusin... thanks 4 any help..

ohhh... i dunno if the way i did it was an efficient way.. however it worked.. i recorded out my beat to a multitracker. sampled it back it in to a pad. then i imagined how i wanted the opening to sound, trimmed it in the mpc down to the point where i wanted it sound. put it on a pad. and quantized on 1/8 to make sure the sample played on every quarter note. it worked and sounded fine, but again. probably not the most efficient way.

That's the same way I would have did it.

an easier way...

take your 2 or 4 bar sequence, or whatever. copy it to another sequence. make the new sequence 1 bar long, make the time signature 1/4 instead of 4/4. Sounds weird but works. this is better because you don't have to fly it out of the machine and back in (sound degradation) and it comes out tighter. repeat this 1 bar sequence 4 times in song mode, then have it switch back to the original sequence.

Only problem is when you have a long sample in the original sequence. when the machine goes from your new 1 bar sequence to the original sequence, any long samples will continue playing. What you do is take the long sample, assign it to another pad and make that pad "note off" Then go to your 1 bar sequence. Replace the long sample with the "note off" sample in step edit...then adjust duration so it works out perfectly.

I have done it this way before too and it's true, no sound degradation cause it's all done within the digital domain.

I tried your tip and it worked great. I've thougt about trying it in the past but never got around to it. Great tip to know to add some change ups in the sequence.

Right, right, I'd rather NOT be a Neptunite.

Once u dump the whole thing into pro tools or any other recording software u use.....u can copy and paste whole the seq at the beggining 1/8 and u can get the same effecct.....i think thats a lot easier i say......than dumping it out and then back into ur mpc.....
