Help me get past this point

Hi guys,

If you've seen any of my last posts you'll know I'm a newbie to the MPC, and producing for that matter. but i've been dj-ing for about 7 years.

Now I've made a whole bunch of loops like this one:

I get myself to this point in about 10 mins but get kinda lost as what to do next?

I've tried adding other sounds, changing the arrangment etc but i can't seem to make a loop that doesn't get repetitive after one time through.

So i guess my question is, whats wrong with it? how do i get myself past this point?

Loops are repetitive in nature. It just comes right back around to the begining (no I haven't heard your sample). Make more than one loop with different arrangements and variations, chain them together to make a song or track.

Put the loops in sequences, add more stuff, tak away stuff, chain those sequences together in song mode to make a song. It takes practice, time, different music and sometimes a break from music all together, resting your ears to get more ideas for variations and changeups.

thanks Lamp... theres good repetitive and bad repetitve.

i kinda need someone with a bit of experience to listen to it to see if this loop is worth working with or not, i mean by having made it like this have i taken a wrong turn and hit a dead-end, because that's kinda how it feels :-/

This sounded OK to me, just make a few copies of it and drop out a couple of the notes, change them or maybe try using note repeat on 16ths or something, that said it does sound quite boring but I think that is probably due to the fact its basically a single stab sample with drums, I couldnt really tell as I just have laptop speakers here but it doesnt sound like it has too much depth? maybe try adding a counter melody or bass or something or filtering a sampled loop and running that uin th background (if you can get it in key that is)

well by a stab he would mean a sound you might have in your sequence already, and chop it again just so its a short sound, and stab in it somewheres.

i dont know a better way to explain it, but you dont HAVE to use a sample you have in your sequence already, anything you wanna use as a stab you can.

Think about what a stab means outside of music, a quick motion, so a stab in music terms would be a quick short sound.

I think he's saying it sounds like a stab sample, not I should use a stab sample.

I get what you mean by the stab, short sound thing, a stab in scratching terms is a short quick forward motion.

Something sounds a bit odd about that loop. It sounds like you havent finished the loop at the right point or something? Have you got the start point the same in the trim and loop field?
The Mpc is great for doing loops and beats etc and that will take a while till you master it but eventually you will have to get a synth or sound module aswell to get some more sounds happening, chords, sweeps, effects etc.

I've heard it now. I don't know what to advise to try and help it out. I can only repeat what I said earlier. .....same thing that everyone else here has said also.

Thanks for all the advice fellas, I think I'm getting somewhere with it. If it doesn't sound to crap when i'm done I'll post it up for a listen.
