midi chain

I am using mpc2000xl with virus indigo 2 and I just got a roland jv1080 which I am going to use with a midi controller. Mpc is the master obviously so I go from midi out to midi in of virus. Then do I also go out from mpc to the JV in? or do I go out from MPC to the midi controller in?

I guess you want to record data from the MIDI controller into the MPC, so you should connect the controller´s OUT to the MPC´s IN.
Then chain anything you want to the MPC´s OUTs.

Principially, you can go from each OUT to each IN how you want, the only thing to remember is that a MIDI signal will be transported only through 3 units, not further.

Hey dukelido, thanks for you help. The out of the controller is going to the in of the module at the moment. Youre saying it should go to the MPC, then should thru go to the module instead of out?

Also I currently have 1 out going from the MPC to the my virus synth. I have the understanding that data leaves via out and enters via in. But when I playback my sequencer it plays back the synth?? How is this so if I do not have any midi cable going back to the MPC's in from my synth?

Hook the controller´s MIDI OUT to the MPC´s MIDI IN, as well the Synth´s MIDI IN to the MPC´s MIDI OUT.

Now set the MIDI channel of a sequence track to the MIDI channel that your synth is receiving on.
Set also the channel which the controller is sending on to the channel on that the synth is receiving.
You may now play your synth from the controller "through" the MPC.
You may also record data from your controller into the sequence track, so that the synth will be played by the MPC when the sequence is started again.
Set a new track for each further unit that has to be played on an individual MIDI channel.

On the MPC´s main screen, at the left side of the "MIDI" track term, you see either a "M" or a "S".
This selects either "Multitrack recording" or "Single track recording".
"Multi track recording" allows to record 32 (16A + 16B) channels to be recorded at the same time onto specific sequence tracks.
"Single track recording" allows you to record only onto the track you have currently selected.
