drum sounds and samples

where do you cats get all your drum samples from? i don't sample long breaks just chop them up into one hits.
lately i have been checkin out some old french funk from like 71. crazy.
just thought i'd see.

id have to say i put in the effort like yourself. the culture of crate digging is as enjoyable to me as playing the music at gigs.

i do have a sample cd though, Wall of Vinyl, which i have gotten some nice drum hits from. id never use a drum loop though. creating rhythm is a hobby/passion and my niche in the acts i work with.

uncovering more deep dark secrets of my poor samplist behaviour, i have downloaded something like 150 classic drum breaks from a very extensive site (find it yourself heh heh). like i said i dont like using drum loops i havent made up sampled myself so i run those downloaded gems through recycle, output the slices and after a day of processing 150 drum loops (i kid you not, that was a heavy day) i now have a library of thousands of percussive hits.


as for WHAT i like to sample... everything. im a music nut anyway so anything i get i play once to listen to, then again to think about samples. here in australia we have certain instrumental collection album packs (im not naming them, as they are my gems) that a certain magazine of all things put out, and ive been lucky to snap them up at op shops right under the noses of other crate diggers who are peeling for jazz/funk records.

heh... in case you dont use the word "op shop" in your country is short for "oppurtunity store" which is a colloqualism for any of those charity stores that sell second hand stuff.

lastly... our government funded tv station "ABC" is playing ancient black and white movies late every night. thats a GOLD MINE of samples thats being slept on!

Hehe i don't know if i'm allowed in since i don't even have my MPC yet.
I ordered it over a month ago but the company that imports then to finland has to be run by apes or something, ´cause now it looks like i'll have to wait another month..

Anyway i have been collecting records for the sole purpose of sampling for about a year or so,and what i do is i go into these kind of 'op' shops and just buy anything that either looks good, or is really cheap.
I usually end up with about five records for about five dollars, and about ten to twenty seconds of samplable material, be it drums, sounds or straight loops. Hell, even two seconds of good material is good for a day's work.

I am going to use the AKAI-cd though, once i get money to buy a cd-drive, as there is supposed to be a lot of good sounds in it.

But yeah cratedigging is good, and the smaller the town you're digging in the nicer it is finding that long-out-of-print-or-never-before-seen -sh*t.

I get sounds from Tape, 8 Track tape (you don't know nuthin bout that now do you), TV, Minidisc, MP3's, Records, Video Tape, Internet, Anywhere I hear them actually.

SBS has some good material on the tube.

Oh yeah, i read an article a while back about some guy who was using those.
They look nice, but aren't they hard to come by?
I've never seen them anywhere.. well i guess that's the fun part, using something no one else is using.

I agree with D_samp about those old black-and-whites, they're full of great stuff, especially all those old hornsounds and a lot of nice random sounds.

I also have this old SFX vinyl, like horror SFX and screams and all that, a lot of good stuff in that too.

That's crazy, you can't rewind or fast-forward on those things, how do you even sample from them?
I gave away all my 8-track tapes at some point, but I still got my 8-track player in the closet.

That sh!t reminds me of having to wedge a match book in the crack where the tape goes in so that the tape would align right and not sound all warbly.

...and then you'd be listening to a song, and it would just fade out right in the middle of the song, and you'd have to wait for the damn thing to click onto the next channel, and then the song would fade up right where it left off. Whoever invented those was a dumbass.

My parents left me with a gang of 8 pfunk 8tracks. I got the player in my closet also, I bust it out every now and then and let my boys laugh at it, but when they hear the samples and the music I create from them they get quiet real quick like.
