I am not sure if I follow. From what I gather:

1) "I change the program"
2) "the sound ... changes to ... the new program

Is that summry right?

You make a sequence correct. Don't change the DRUM after you've recorded your beat, WHY, because the sounds you played are in that original DRUM. If you change the DRUM then the sounds change to the new DRUM. Your sequence will still be there but the sounds will be different.

For your next sequence you can choose a different DRUM and record to that if you like or use the same DRUM as the previous track it doesn't matter, but once you record to it DON'T change it.

Sounds are loaded into Programs.
Programs are tied to DRUMS.
DRUMS are tied to sequences.
(If I'm wrong I'm sure someone will enlighten me)

Changing any one of them AFTER you record might alter your sequences.

I think i confused myself..
erm I'm new to the mpc so please be gentle I'll try explaining again

I have a zip disk with hundreds of drum hits, fx, riffs..They are all saved on the disk as 14 different programs. Lets say I load up Program 1 and I use a few drum hits from there maybe on pad a1,2,3... Then maybe I like a guitar riff on program 2 so switch to program to on the program screen...but when I press play to hear the drum hits I recorded into a sequence, I dont hear the drums from program 1 on pads a1,2,3 I hear the sounds from program 2 on pads a1,2.3...so i just wanted to knw if there was a way of using different sounds from different programs in a sequence, without the sounds changing when u switch programs.... there i think i explained it right....time will tell...

Are you switching tracks before you switch the program?

By Kid_$olo Wed Dec 03, 2003 11:11 pm
when I change program, it's when I'm about to start a new sequence

Here's a short step by step, these steps are for a 2000xl but I don't think the 2000 is much different.

Load up all the programs you want to use> press shift program(6)> press drum1>scroll til' you see the program you want to use for drum1> do the same for drum 2,3 and 4> go to the main screen and select drum 1,2,3 or 4 under track 1> record a drum pattern (or whatever)> change the track to track 2> select a different program> record whatever else> keep repeating until you have a hit!

You said you have a 2k, not 2kxl correct? There is only 1 drum on 2k. If you load another program on top of that then the previous program is over written but the previous sounds remain in memory. Correct me if I'm wrong.

yes its a 2k not 2k-xl. but u change load different programs without the previous getting deleted. coooocoooo i tried your tip but it didnt work same problem...I must be doing something wrong.Just went through the manual again. I'll keep at it, maybe will work around it....any ideas jus holla....thnx anyway

what's up dude. no need to ask twice...

you are just having a little problem understanding how the machine works, that's all. You need to understand how a sequence and a program work together. For example, let's say you make beat with the kick on A1 and the snare on A2. The kick hits on the first beat, and the snare hits on the second beat. Understand that you are not really recording a sound INTO the sequence...what you are doing is telling the sequencer, at beat one, to PLAY whatever sound happens to be on PAD A1. This explains why you need to load your sequence AND your program. The sequence has the information about what pads to play at what time...and the program decides what sounds go on what pads. So when you change PROGRAMS, you are assigning a whole new set of sounds to the pads, right? So when the sequencer says play A1, and you change what's on A1, you're gonna get a different sound.

What you do is this...if you have a few programs loaded, and you want to hear your original sequence, but try some new sounds on top of it - hit shift program. Hit a free pad. DO NOT change program. Scroll through all the sounds on that free pad by using the jog wheel (use the arrows to get the cursor onto the sound name first.) When you do this, you are scrolling through ALL the sounds that are loaded into the machine...not just the sounds in one individual program.[/i]

.....soooo

this means that when you have one sequence sounding good, and you want to load in another program for the sounds - go ahead and load in the program - but make sure that when you hit shift + program, the original program is selected...then, scroll through some sounds - magically, you'll be able to go through any sound you have loaded into the machine.

...and you can't work around this one, man...just figure it out :D
