Is a Mixer with Drect outs essential 4 use with An MPC & PC

Ive seen the Yamaha mixer mg16 which i quite like but i dont think it has direct outs. The way I work is I make my music in the MPC then i intend to bounce the tracks down as audio into LOGIC.

Without direct outs on a mixer, im assuming this means i have to bounce 1 track at a time....Right?! Hmmmm, very time consuming. Not sure if Im up for that.

The mixer has no stereo outs?

the magic of busses.... or sub groups.

get a mixer with as many busses as your soundcard has inputs.

The problem here isnt about the amount of Buss the mixer has.

I dont want to group things up then bounce them down. I want the same seperation I have on the desk bounced into Logic E.G Track 1=Kick , Track 2=Snare. You follow?

Without them, means one track at a time. Y would you make a mixer without direct outs?? Or am i getting this all wrong

Direct outs are not as popular today due to the popularity of PC recording. There is not much difference between connecting an instrument to a mixer and sending that signal from the direct out to a PC than there is just connecting the instrument directly to the PC input. The only significant thing you get by using a mixer and it's direct outs is the mixer's preamps for mics, but then again you can just buy a preamp by itself.

Direct outs existed primarily since old recorders did not have mixing capabilities (ADAT and reel to reels).One would typically run a signal into the mixer, through the direct outs and on to the ADAT. The outputs of the ADAT were fed back into another set of channels for monitoring during recording (or boucing for mixdowns).

I prefer using sub busses for recording since there is a little more flexibility in the routing, but a high number of busses gets very expensive. Busses are the primary cost of a mixer. Digital mixers are a little better in the cost to bus ratio. One of the local studios I set up we use an 02R with a set of TDIF cards and record 16 tracks at once to the PC.

What about EQ? If you have a good mixer, the EQ will probably be better than the digital EQ in your software.

Yea, My bad. Thats what I meant. Late nite typing caused that little blunder....
I've been since thinking of an alternative to all this. Could i use the inserts of the mixer as Outs instead or perhaps the Aux sends or is there a quality transfer issue?

Busses let you do what you want without repatching.

Say you have 4 inouts on your soundcard, and you get yourself a mixer with 4 busses.

Get ready to record, assign your kik channel to bus 1, snare to 2, hihat to 3, bassline to 4, press record. now your tracks are separate just as if you used the individual outs. Now when it is time to record tracks 5-8, instead of pulling out plugs, you just press little buttons on your mixer to assign those tracks to the busses, and mute the tracks you already recorded (or take them off the bus).

Make sense now?

I get ya now. Thought u were offering me the option of grouping my channels via the busses.

how many inputs does your soundcard have?

The first doesn't have subs (except left / right)

if you eventually will want to record more at one time, get the mixer with the extra subs now. 8 subs would be the best, but 4 is good too.

Well Im gettin the soundcard and Mixer 2gether so its just standard at the mo'

Soundcard wise, Im looking at the delta 44. Depending on the prioce I pay for my mixer/How much money I have left I'd prefer to cop the Delta 1010lt then hook up a loom but hey. We'll see.

yes, you can use the inserts, but I think the you lose the eq and other featurse, depending on where the insert is tapped.

Stick with subs. get at least 4, but ideally 8, since I think the 1010 has 8 ins.

You've been helpful...In an ideal world id love to cop the 16series Mackie but the price is expensive.

look into getting an old mixer, ther are big, pot will need a cleaning, but very good sound. You could go with a behringer. much cheaper, and of course try ebay.
