Zip Drive

I'm thinking about buying a Zip Drive for the MPC 2000xl. I heard that there are zip drives that aren't compatible with the MPC2kxl. So my question is... which models are compatible? Also, which brand do you recomend? I read the manual... I saw that they mention the Iomega Zip100, but I want to hear what ya think. Also, I briefly went on zip websites and saw that they basically mention that they are compatible with PC or MAC, but fail to mention the MPC. So help me out.

Iomega is most common, i think. Actually i doubt there is any other brand making ZIP drives, coz Iomega invented them. But i could be wrong.
Anyway they work well with MPCs. At least the 100 series. Dont know about larger versions, but i heard they do....It's quite logical they do not mention compatibility with mpc, coz it's only one of hundreds SCSI compatible interfaces...

IOMEGA, PANASONIC and SONY.

The latter two being manufactured under license from Iomega.

If you have to use a ZIP drive.

Models that work with the MPC2000XL are:

SCSI ZIP100
SCSI ZIP250

Stay away from the "Hybrid ZIP PLUS" models.

Stay away from SCSI JAZ drives.

If possible, bypass ZIP drives and go the card reader route ( as recommended by mnh2410/NICOLE ).

First, want to thank Errupt for that website... they explain the pros and cons of each device preatty nicely. Second, want to thank Nicole for her advice.... you got me to open up my MPC and check its insides. Third, gota thank Lampdog for introducing me to the MPC Bible for useful websites. Ok.... So, I have decided to look for a hard drive that I can install into the MPCkxl. I've realize that I should go for one that is 4.5GB or less, for the MPCkxl can only access 4.5GB. Nevertheless, I found out that I need to find one that doesn't draw too much power on startup cause it can damage the sampler. I'm in the process of checking how Nicole installed her drive, but I also realized that she spend around 120 dollars. I found drives for 40 - 50 dollars on Errupt's website, but understand that they can damage my sampler. If ya have any recommendations as to what I should do now...holla at me cause I still haven't made up my mind.

Take Nicole's advice and just get an internal card reader.

nowadays 1gb compactflash is around $20.

there are no moving parts in the flash card reader like in a zip drive and a hard drive so there is no data loss due to mechanical failure. plus flash loads pretty fast.

search the forum for card readers for the 2000xl.

you probaly won't spend more than $75 on card reader and cables.

Thanks for clearing things up, I finally know some of the different types of devices you can install internally and their prices. So a flash card reader... would I be able to buy it a have someone install it for me? If so, what stores do you recommend? I guess I got a little intimidated after opening the MPC. Thanks for the help.

This topic is old-but incase someone looks it up again.
I have a 2000xl and installed a Nec Internal Zip Drive (Zip 100- Model FZ110A) where the floppy drive used to be. The only thing I had to do was change the original end of the power cable that went from the floppy to the main board. There is a website floating around here somewhere on the power cable modding-I can't seem to find it. But the Nec drive works beautifully.
So I guess its on the list of compatible Internal Zip Drives....

I installed a internal ide/atapi zip 250 with juste a small modification of the electric cable,
I bought a connector ide female 2x20 holes

(0,70€ in France)
just put on simple ide 1.27mm cable.
That works very well!
(but it accepts only the zip 100Mo with the OS 1.14… )
