ZIP DRIVE VERSUS CD-ROM FOR SAVING

I just got back from trusty GUITAR CENTER. I spoke with a guy who knows the MPCxl pretty well and he gave me some advice that I haven't heard before. Most MPC2000XL owners have recommended an external zip drive SCSCI for saving information/samples. This guy actually was against it. He says the saving on cd-r/cd-rw is better because it is cheaper (for cd discs) and th drive will double as a way to import sample from cd.
I thought this made perfect sense. Does anyone have any thoughts on this?

don't trust anyone in GC(knucklehedz)...i don't listen to them.....they will cut your creativity bad

I know the track record of GC which is why I said "trusty." I should have added the quotes. But the guy I met there was NOT an employee. That should be noted or rather the fact that it was at Guitar Center was purely coincidental. Anyway, I want to hear from about why either the zip drive or the cd-rom drive is better? specifics...

I am learning something new everyday cuz I never knew and hadn't heard that a mpc2000xl can burn to disk. But I am believing this is not what you were getting at. I prefer zip cuz It's quicker than firing up nero to drop a sample on disk when I can throw it to a zip for my audio editor quickly. If in the rare ocassion I just so happen not get the sample edited correctly, I can easily overwrite the file as well ass save my program, sequence and all files.

MPC 2k and 2kxl CANNOT use SCSI CDR/CDRW to burn or save, only to LOAD. Whoever told your that is not to be trusted, and must be burned at the stake..

This is true, You can load from a CDR quicker than from floppy or zip. But you may have misunderstood him or just forgot to add the part about burning the samples to CD R or CD RW disc using your computer not your MPC. The MPC doesn't have or or support a software burning program. No burning engine. Compared to zips cdr s' are dam near 100% cheaper and more efficient. The only set back would be not every studio has a CD rom drive to hook up to your MPC meaning that you would have to either lug yours around with you or use zips as your secondary back up source. In my opinion, a cool asset! You just need to make sure that goining from your MPC to your computer that your sample names be no longer than 8 characters long. This includes spaces as well or you will have problems trying to reload programs you'd already saved. Why? Because your Pgm file will be searching for the un altered sample names. AIGHT, Holla!

Naming is not an issue if you:

1. Use MPC formated media (Zip, HD, CF cards)
2. Use disk2file to image the media into a flat file.
3. Use your favorite CD writing app to burn the image file to CD.

The result is having a duplicate file structure as the original (long filenames, multiple partitions and all) on the CD.

This is exactly how Akai sample CD's are made.

Yes of course if you have akai formatted media but if you don't have , and you have only wave and pgm, a MPC 2000 doesn't read normal cd ISO, read only akay cd, Mierda!
