eb-16 filter/eq question/problem

Hi,

I have a 2kxl with the eb16. My question relates to the use of the filter/eq module within the eb16 efx card. I know how to access and tweak all the parameters for the different mixer efx, but it seems that you can only ever apply the efx as a "send".

For example, if i turn on the filter in eb16 "M1", it does not directly affect the sounds within that program, instead you have to send each pad to the efx unit. This is fine if you want a "send" effect, but for something like the filter, i want to use it as an "insert" type effect (technically called a "processor" if its used in this fashion i guess) that affects the whole sound on the pad (ie to filter out the low end on a hi hat or string sample, etc.). I don't want the unaffected sample to play along with the sample that is processed through the eb16.

I've fooled around with this alot but I can't seem to find any way to get the eb16 filter/eq to work as an "insert" effect. Any help would be much appreciated. I've tried turning up the vol. in the fxsend screen, and then turning it down to 0 on the stereo/indiv. sample screens, but this results in the sound not playing at all, because nothing is getting sent to the efx processor.

Also, completely unrelated, for whatever reason, the rec and overdub buttons on my 2kxl do not punch in when a sequence is playing, i can only initiate recording if a sequence is stopped. Does anyone know why this might be happening?

If you have the 8-outs, set your effects to a pair of individual outs (on their own) * and they will then behave as an insert with a totally wet signal.

*(From the EFFECTS screen, highlight MIX and press OPEN WINDOW. Then select OUTPUT).

Edit: You should be able to do this with L/R too by turning down the stereo (main) faders

That makes sense, unfortunately I don't have the 8 out expansion!

I've tried doing it (like I said above) by turning down the stereo (or individual) fader for the sample/pad I want the filter to act as an insert on, but, of course what happens is as the stereo fader gets turned down, less and less of the signal is sent to the fxsend, so when the stereo fader is at 0, even if I have the efx send turned up all the way there is no signal.

Is there no way to simply insert the filter on the actual sample itself? It seems odd that akai would make such a useful filter effect and have it only able to be applied as a send...

I want to use it mostly for getting rid of bass in samples, so the low end doesn't get crowded...

Any more thoughts?

what you want to do is turn down the Stereo level for each pad that your sending to m1, m2, r1 or r2.., if you leave up, your getting a mix of the dry and wet signals. so bring the stereo fader down for the pads your sending to effects, and youll notice your only hearing the sounds after they have been thru the effect chain.

I can't seem to reproduce your problem on my machine.
My effects card is working with a pre-fade send, unlike yours but, I will look further into this.
Meanwhile let us know if you solve it.

I seem to have solved the problem, it was as you explained, turned down the stereo fader and up the effect, it is a pre-fade send. I tried this before and it didn't work for whatever reason, but it is now! yeehaw!

Now, does anyone have any idea why my rec and overdub buttons won't punch in!?

you gotta hold REC or OVERDUB down then press play.

I know that, I'm talking about for punching in on the fly, as the sequence is already playing.

It works fine if i hold rec or overdub down then press play, but if i push either of them while the sequence is playing nothing happens (they won't punch in...) any ideas?

try it again while the sequence is playing, you can turn the rec off by presing it once, but you gotta do the hold overdub play thing again to jump back into REC mode.

korce, I think that you should try (while sequence is playing) pressing and holding the PLAY button and then pressing either REC or OVERDUB, depending on what you want to do - record new stuff in the track or merge new notes with the already recorded ones.
