The MPC will only recognize 16 bit wavs. What you could do is use the resampling feature in your edit screen under the sample trim screen option. Here you can play with the sample rate to dirty it up. The higher the quality you want the sample to be resampled to the LONGERRRRR! ! ! it will take to complete the resampling process.

I use a wave editor on my PC to process samples to emulate warmth and other things then import back into the XL.

its only not about the BIT RATE

its about the CONVERTORS

you shoulldn't think that simply using the mpc to reduce the bit-rate will "make it sound like the sp1200"

thats like saying if you drive two cars at the same speed theyll be the same.

each bit of gear is made up of different components that leave their own flavour on your sound, regardless of paper-book-specs.

yeppers.

get a somkinda destructor* and just sample those crippled 4bit, 6bit, 8bit, 12bit samples right back into your MPC (using PCM 16-bit WAV)

and then its not just the bits, it's also about the samplerate

*) e-phonic LO-FI is free, tobybear decimator is great too.

remember to watch your ears it can get nasty when dynamics start to go on/off...
