Technical questions for the MPC2000xl and the MPC2000
By holger honda Mon Dec 22, 2003 6:19 pm
I post this as my last resort.
I have been using my MPC2000 for four years.About a year ago i got a racksampler and the following problem appeared.
Lets say i make a rythm part uot of drumloops in my other sampler(Yamaha a5000):

1"booom-tjack"
2"booom-tjack"
3"booom-tjack"
4"booom-tjack"

Now i save my seq to external HD.One day later i load up the same sequense.it now sounds:

1"booom-tjack"
2"bo"
3"bo"
4"bo"

This is making it IMPOSSIBLE for me to use it live or anything.Im totally fed up.I have searched the forum but it seems that im the only one having this problem. FCUK OFF MPC!
Now heres some other facts. This occurs with or without internal programs loaded. And with or without any songs in memory.
It is liked to the .mid file im currently using. Now heres one strange thing.
If I move the secuence from bank A to B (ie from 1-16 to 17-32) the problem sometimes dont occur!? And heres another thing,Say I make this rythm thing on pad 1 and then copies the rythm to the other 15 pads (they now all play the same thing).I save it all as a .mid and reboot and load the file back again. The problem is now on SOME of the pads while other pads seems to be fully functional.
Im going nuts.Is there a cure?Shall I get another MPC?

Dear Mr. honda,
im sorry, i'm confused, but what kind of MPC are you using? XL or "classic." because you started a thread about upgrading to the XL but your problems seem unlike any that I've encountered with the classic.
My first bit of advice ould be, don't trade up for an XL if you are "fed up" wth the MPC you have.

Lets start from the top. What exactly are you trying to do with the A5000? Trigger it from the MPC? If this is problematic then maybe your MPC is messed up.

I may be just talking out my ar$e here, but perhaps this is a note duration problem? If the A5000 is triggered to note on/ note off, then you could concievably have MIDI sequence on the MPC where the note duration is shorter than the original sample so that your original recording sounds like what you want but subsequent recordings cut off mid way.
You'll have to tell me more about your problem because I don't understand. Any one else? Come on you "experts"! Live up to your titles!

I'm not an expert, but my first impression of the problem you described is a note duration problem. Descartes may be right, when a midi file goes from one machine to another there's got to be some discrepancies between how one machine records midi over another. Check the step edit screen to see what the duration of each note is. If that doesn't fix the problem maybe you should look under program parameters for each pad to see if "note off" is activated. By the way, I'm using an XL.

By the way, don't get rid of the MPC.

Dear all.
Im using the original 2000.
And Yes it is a duration problem.
I record four bars of say a duration of 350 each.(triggering a note off/on sample)After saving to hd and opening the same file again the duration of the same note is 350 for the first bar but just 30 or so for the other three.
So I have to re record and save again but OOOPs the same thing happends again. And Again And Again....

okay, I'm assuming that you are having this problem not with samples triggered on the internal smapler of the MPC but samples triggered by the MPC on your A5000. So what your going to want to do is look through your A5000 manual and figgure out how to set it so every time a note is triggered, it plays that note in it's entirety, regadless of the note duration. What might be happening is that you are accientally programing note off messages without realising it. This is easy to do, especially if you are recording in real time. So you need to teach the A5000 to ignore these note off messages.

Hope this helps.

one more thought: are you sure your note durations are at 350? Because each bar, at least on the clssic MPC2000, has 384 clicks (not 400 hundrd as one might assume). So if your note durations are at four hundred a bar, then it would result in exactly what you are talking about: the first bar playing fine and then the rest only playing for 16 clicks and then cutting out. This is because a note on message at 01.01.00 with a duration of 400 is going to send a note off message at 02.01.15 (which is exactly 400 clicks later). Now the same note triggered at 02.01.00 is going to recieve this message and turn off (at 02.01.15), even if it's duration was set for longer.

you probably already know all this though...

I didn't.

yeah, I think the technical term is ppqn for pulses (or parts) per quarter note (or something like that). the mpc2000 has 96 ppqn while I think the 4000 has a lot more (but don't quote me on that) as do computer based sequencers like cubase. Of course as I don't use cubase or the 4000 im not exactly sure... for contrast, the dinky little yamaha QY100 sequencer, which is battery powered, has 480 ppqn.
Check the Technical Specs section at the back of your manual under sequencer.
I don't know if the XL has the same ppqn as the "classic" MPC2000.

Descartes this is the best lead so far! I only assumed the number 350 but yes it might as well be 400.Well heres what.I dont want to set all my long samples to "one shot".Maybe I have to make sure that they are less than 400 long and give some decay on the yamaha if i need to.
This gotta be it.Thanks.

try turning of the timing on the 2000. I'm no expert and didin't read the other post being a hurry to shut down but I believe that would help. Because from the posts that I did read it's definate a note duration issue hence adjust your timing so they are both in sync or just turn the one on your MPC off al together. (1/16 to off). AIGHT! !
