so know i'm dumb for still using zip disks, but i haven't upgraded my setup in a long time...so just to prove i'm an idiot, i went and got myself into the following situation. I'm very desperate to find a solution, so any advise would save me from calling it quits (life that is). Please excuse the lengthy post but i want to describe exactly what what happened to be completely clear:
my zips are getting old, and since they are filled with hundreds of my most ancient and priceless tracks, i decided i really needed to back them up before it was too late.
so i slipped the disks into a zip drive connected to my mac (running osx) in order to back them up.... [Obviously, i hadn't first read the many posts on this forum warning that it is a bad idea to connect MPC zips to your computer.]
so everything seemed to be fine, and i was able to copy all of the folders on the zip disks to my computer (with only a minor glitch where i kept getting a "this file already exists" message, which i was able to work around by just copying files from each folder manually).
then i noticed another strange thing: each (beat) folder i ended up with on my computer was smaller than the one i had copied from the zip disk. BUT since all the files (that i could see) were copied over and all the wav/aps/all file sizes matched, i assumed that this was some random folder-size-calculation glitch that i didn't need to worry about (like i said, i'm a genius).
SO... then when i put those disks back into my mpc, I found that there were a bunch of .wav files in each beat folder that never displayed on my mac, and hadn't been backed up. also, i saw that a few of those mysterious .wav files had been renamed and now had the letters "t6" at the end of the file name (before the .wav)....pause...."OH GOD..."
when i loaded the APS file for a beat, all the wavs loaded up except, of course, the wavs that had been renamed with the "t6" at the end. for those files the screen said "file not found" and i was forced to "SKIP".
I tried to manually load the "t6" wavs with the hopes of assigning the sounds back to the right pads, but i kept getting a "CAN'T OPEN FILE" message. strange...
so i tried renaming the "t6" wavs (from the Load view), and i ended up with two files: the original wav (with the crappy "t6" name), and another smaller .wav file that had my new name but kept giving me a "WRONG FILE FORMAT" when i tried to load it.
my beats play, but now all of them are missing very important samples (.wav's) that are now not loading.
....so that is my current predicament and here are my 2 questions:
1. How can I rename or fix the .wav files that were automatically changed by my computer so that they will load again in my MPC.
2. What is the best way to back up old zip disks full of MPC programs, wavs, and beats without experiencing these types of problems? (even if these disks are hopeless, i still have a few more that i didn't mess up).
