midi sync to a tascam multitrack recorder

alright, so what i want to do is sync up my mpc to my tascam portastudio.. i want to do this so i can record my track by tracks with precise timing, you know like by triggering each record on the mpc, so the timing will be right on each

is this even a common use of midi sync or am i all wrong?

anyways, im wondering how i would do this..

ive tried hooking the mpcs midi out to the recorders midi in, and vice versa, and ive gotten to the point where i can trigger a play on the recorder from the mpc, but just cant get it to record?

anyways im all messed up, any help would be appreciated

Is this portastudio that uses tape for recording or is it a hard drive / mini disc recorder ?

its a 24 track digital with a hard drive, its the 2488

I took this effort to find the info you are looking for.
And guess what, it was in the 2488 user's manual...

Start reading on page 81, it's all explained there.
Also search for some articles on midi clock and midi time code and collect the knowledge before hitting on the forum.

but yeah ive read the manual as well, and have looked around and read about time clock and the different syncing options

its still left me hazy on how exactly id sync with my mpc for recording onto the multitrack purposes, and specifics like for my case, should i have the mpc slaving and the tascam be the master, or vice versa

Personally I prefer to have recording device slaved to the mpc, but that's just because it's more convenient for me.
For you it might be the opposite way, try both ways and decide.

About the sync options, there are different opinions on how and when to use midi clock and midi time code. And here again you have to decide.

I find myself using two ways of syncing.I use software program to record...But I use smpte code (pre recorded from the mpc - the most accurate and precise sync option there is according to my recent tests), which is sent to the mpc and the mpc is sending midi clock signal to the su700.

There you go. It took me some time to decide which method will be the best for my setup. You've got to do the same thing.

Since you've read some stuff on the midi clock and mtc, you should know that midi clock doesn't provide as good sync options as mtc/smpte. You will probably hear someone who will tell you the exact opposite, that midi clock is better...There are pros and cons in every single way of syncing.
