I recently had my 2000xl open replacing some contact switches and installing a new zip drive, and I noticed this: (props to a_real_mc's for the pic which I edited)

This I presume is a power transformer for the backlight for the LCD. What I'd like to know is

1: if anybody has tried putting a switch accros the wires that lead to this transformer to create a backlight on/off swich like the MPC 3000 as
this would preserve the life of the LCD

2: if anybody with the electrical know-how knows if its just a case of putting a switch across the power inputs to this transformer or would I need to do something a bit more sophisticated?

Thanks.

If you can just disconnect the power cables that go to the transfo then you can test yourself whether your mpc still boots and whether the lcd backlight is turned of. If it is then it is imo safe to assume that is would suffice to put a powerswitch across the power line to be able to trun the backlight on/off on your lcd display. Now the problem is that it is not the backlight that breaks down with the 2k(xl) screens but the lcd display itself, so I don't know how much added value this hack will give you. Just my 2 cents.
