Just wandering if anyone can give me some info on external SCSI hard drives to use with the 2000xl,
i am currently looking for one but don't really know where to start... has anyone got any makes/models that they would recomend??

Get a CF reader, no moving parts, massive storage, easy sample backup.

S4samplers is expensive - I would reccomend try and find an old electronics surplus store somewhere locally if you want a SCSI HD.

I found a place near my house that has all kinds of old electronics, and found an old SCSI HD case with a 100mb drive in it (the thing is pretty big!) and they were able to take a new 4.5 gb SCSI internal and put it in the case. Everything works fine and it cost me 30 bucks or so plus the cost of cables.

I'm lookin at doin the CF upgrade too tho, just so i can use the HD as backup and use the CF as the main storage medium.

thanks for the suggestions, i need a big HD cos i like working with loads of samples, and so i think i'll look into the CF reader, but i'm also trying to track down an old SCSi HD, my Zip works fine but 250mb is not enough space!!!

A 2 gig cf card cost close to nothing and is more reliable and easier to find than those small scsi harddisks. Don't get your hopes to high on massive harddisk 'cause they simply don't work with the 2kxl.

Plus the "Backup Factor". I don't know about the 2kXL but on the 2k classic there is no way to copy files from one device to another except for copying the OS to a specific device, so without a CF card or some other removable storage medium, you have no way of backing up your work, and Murphy's Law WILL reveal itself...

Yes, though I'd personally be scared to stick an FAT16 formatted CF card with all (or a whole bunch of) my work into the comp (especially since I'm on a mac) - I can see this turnin real bad potentially. As painful as it is, once I get the CF I'll probably end up reloading all my beats from the SCSI HD, and resaving them .aps and .all at a time to the CF to make sure its all backed up. Figure I'll use one (or more) CF in MPC format for actually saving stuff and have a separate CF in FAT16 for transferring b/w the mac and pc. That way I don't need to worry about the Mac messin with my FAT16 CF files...

Just out of curiosity, has anyone had any problems with either windows or mac OS corrupting a FAT16 MPC compact flash when trying to back their ish up?

I hear you on that playboy. Me personally, because I have so many PC parts laying around, if I used Mac primarily, I would build a PC just for the purpose of backing up my MPC files. I'd probably end up using it as a general backup server, but definitely for my MPC files/data.

The only issue I've noticed with the CF cards bouncing between the MPC and the PC is that MOST not all of the time, if I save say sample files (.SND or .WAV) on the MPC with filenames that don't adhere to the 8.3 filename structure then access the CF card with the PC, if I had those samples in a program and load that program, the program will NOT load those samples because the file name no longer exists as the same name I saved the file. I've simply stopped saving files with non-8.3 names on the CF card I use to transfer between the PC and the MPC. I haven't been using the CF card reader/writer long enough with 2K to figure out what the difference is - only reading from the CF in the PC, accessing the non-conforming files on the PC, etc.

I think its funny as hell that Akai adapted the file system to filenames longer than 8.3 before Microsoft did.

KM

Yes, I've got an old PC lyin around, though I may end up giving it to my bro. Do you figure that runnin XP on the Mac with bootcamp would do the trick though? I bought a copy of XP when i got the Mac for this purpose but haven't gotten around to installing it yet.

Also, I noticed above you still said "the CF card I use to transfer between the PC and the MPC." - so you still use a separate card for doing your transfers yes? ie you dont have all your CF formatted FAT16 and just plug whichever one you want to backup into the PC, you have a specific card for transferring to the PC and you save whatever you want to backup onto the card first right? This is what I figured I'd do cause you never know what can happen when you plug somethin into the PC - i've lost enough zips from trying to transfer between mac and pc and back to mpc etc.

Is there a way to emulate a portion of your pc hd to look like a scsi hd. instead of adding a scsi hd i would rather add a partition to my pc hd and have the xl treat that partition as a scsi hd. Maybe if i purchase a scsi usb adaptor or something of that nature.

SCSI is an interface. You can't have part of your hard drive that has a different interface. Even if you had multiple partitions on the HD, they would all use the same interface (SCSI, IDE, SATA, FC) You also cannot share a HD like that between two different devices. There's a limit on how big of a hard drive the XL can see anyway.
