why is it?

how come when i'm recording, then when I hit tap tempo to play my hihat.
the beat shuts off then starts again..

tap tempo changes the tempo of your sequence
i dunno what that has to do with a hi hat

Tap tempo, when you hit it, your beat tempo changes to adapt to your new inputted tap tempo. You are confusing the usage of tap tempo with note repeat which is the same button. Re-read your manual again.
