os problem on mpc 2000

and unzip it straight to a freshly formatted floppy disk (preferably a new one).
If you get it to work, make a couple of back up copies so you always have a spare if one screws up. As long as you have one copy , you can make more on the machine in the [SAVE] page by selecting [COPY OPERATING SYSTEM]and following the instructions.

If you think you need a new floppy drive, the MPC2000 uses a standard floppy drive as found in most computers (before they became a little obsolete) so either buy a new one or cannibalise an old computer.

The problem you may have here is that to put the os on a disk, I believe the disk has to be MPC-formatted, in order for the MPC to recognize the disk and read it. If you cannot boot the MPC, then you cannot format the disk, to copy the os to.

Now if you have an MPC2000-formatted disk, then simply download the os and copy it to the disk using your pc. Then insert the disk into the drive on your MPC2000 and boot the sampler.

You can also use an external scsi zip drive and the os on a MPC2000-formatted zip disk to boot the sampler. Just do an ebay search using: os disk mpc2000.

But one thing for certain is that it is a very good idea to have extra copies of the os on MPC2000-formatted disks, in case, the os disk goes bad. Or blank MPC2000-formatted disks handy to copy the os to, if you cannot boot up the sampler.

if it turns out your floppy drive is bad it can be replaced with a regular one from a pc.

Running WindowsXP, the only choices I have available are FAT, FAT32, and NTFS. But do not have the FAT16 format option avaialble.

Decided to try the following:

I formatted a disk selecting the FAT option and copied the 1.72 version os to the disk and the MPC2000 did not boot up. The message was Insert MPC2000 Disk!

I, then formatted a disk using the FAT32 option and copied the 1.72 version os to the disk and the MPC2000 did not boot up. The message was Insert MPC2000 Disk!

I could not FAT16 format a disk and copy the os to it to verify and confirm that this works, but you may want to try it, to see for yourself.

Just trying to cover all bases here...after you downloaded the 1.72 OS, you did extract the 2 files from the ZIP archive right?

Yes. The files you are referring to are the system file and the application file. These 2 files were copied to the disk. The MPC looks for the system file first before the executable application os file boots the sampler.

Hmmm...I am stumped. I have created a few OS disks for my MPC2000 with Windows XP, just as you described above, and they have all worked without a problem. Are you sure that your floppy drive is working correctly? Do you have a SCSI device you could try and boot from, and then try to access the floppy drive of your MPC? When I first got my 2k, I had to replace the floppy drive.

Let me back up a little bit as I want to clarify.

The floppy drive on MPC2000 does not function. I never replaced the floppy drive. So I boot my MPC2000 using a scsi zip drive. Everything I have said pertains to formatting (using MPC2000) and copying the os (using Windows XP) to a ZIP disk.

Not sure if formatting of a floppy disk and a zip drive are different or make a difference.

Looking back at the original post, I am wondering if he/she was referring to a floppy drive or a zip drive.

You may be correct for a floppy drive.

But I can tell you that for a zip disk, it has to be formatted by the MPC2000, then the os can be copied to the disk. This is the only way I have had a working zip disk to boot my MPC2000.
